Homestead light will be on

The temporary traffic signal on Homestead Road and Highway 160 should be activated by the time motorists hit the road this morning.

It was expected to be turned on last Friday, but lightning from the storm the day before burned up a junction box for the light, according to Shawn Meagher, an engineer for PBS&J Company.

"We're going to do it at night. We'll have traffic control so traffic coming down 160 won't come flying through when we turn it on," Meagher said Monday.

Valley Electric Association spokeswoman Staci Behnke, in a written statement, said a power line broke during the storm late Thursday afternoon, making contact with a downed guy wire attached to a traffic light structure and then contact with the ground.

Nye County commissioners accepted a $528,784 bid from Las Vegas Electric Co. to install the long-awaited traffic light last April. Nye County Public Works Director Samson Yao said much of the cost of the temporary signal can be used toward a permanent light.
