Open your home to the world Teach your family more about the world -- and each other -- by welcoming a foreign exchange student into your home. The EF Foundation for Foreign Study is looking for families to share their America with a talented teen from another country. Our students speak English, are fully insured and bring their own spending money. Host families provide a bed, meals and a loving home. New to hosting and afraid to commit for too long? Some students simply need a welcome to America home for a few weeks while they wait for placement in a permanent home. Donations for Quilts for Cancer Quilts for Cancer volunteers have worked all year to make Christmas stockings for homebound seniors in Pahrump. Two hundred plus stockings need to be filled with nutritious snacks. Volunteers are also working to have a hand-made gift to accompany the stocking which will be distributed in December. Shakespeare made simple The Pahrump Community Library and the Tumbleweed Tales Society are sponsoring two workshops for Shakespeare fans. "Shakespeare Readers Theater" will be 4:30-6 p.m. every Tuesday at the library, where the group reads and discusses Shakespeare's work. "Shakespeare Made Simple" is 10 a.m.-noon every third Saturday of the month. Sessions are free and are offered to help everyone unlock Shakespeare's language. Wal-Mart Wall of Heros If you have a picture of someone who has served or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the south wall, bring an 8x10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk. This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. Angels Have Wheels All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. For information on Medicare eligibility contact Gregory at 1-800-810-2877. Food drive The food pantry at No to Abuse is empty. Frazier Furniture is holding a food drive offering up to 10 percent discounts on any stock purchase. For each item donated, you will receive a 1 percent discount up to a maximum of 10 percent. All items must be non-perishable. A complete list of acceptable items is available at the store, 1241 E. Calvada Blvd., across from Mountain View Casino. Spaghetti dinner fundraiser There will be a spaghetti dinner fundraiser 5-7 p.m. July 13 at the Bob Ruud Community Center to benefit the girls little league softball. This is the first of many fundraisers. Look for bake sales, car washes and more from the girls softball. They need all the help they can get. Tickets may be purchased from any All-Star player or coach. Tournament play is expected to begin the third week in July in northern Nevada. Volunteer for SCORE All active or retired business people are encouraged to share their knowledge and experience by being a volunteer SCORE counselor. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. VHRU maintains a Web site describing the mission and providing information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The Web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization. Summer/fall rummage sale The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a rummage sale 8-4 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 8-1 p.m. Aug. 2 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372. There will be lots of clothing, linens, crafts, books, household items and appliances. Pahrump Gunfighters The Pahrump Gunfighters are looking for new faces and talent for skits and shootouts. Hunter safety course The Nevada Department of Wildlife and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will sponsor a hunting safety course which is mandatory for all first-time hunters. The classes will be held July 21-26. The schedule is 6-8 p.m., Monday through Friday and 10-2 p.m. on Saturday at 3360 California St. All classes must be attended in order to complete the course. Quilts 4 Cancer meets The Quilts 4 Cancer volunteers will meet for a "Christmas in July" at 10 a.m. July 26. Volunteers will gather to make homemade stockings for Christmas and will need help filling them. The goal is 250 stockings. With each filled stocking a gift will be given. Retired/senior program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers 24 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Prescription meds assist Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance. Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies. Pick up the cards at the pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, 250 N. Highway 160, Suite 4, or call 751-7095. Toastmasters The Pahrump Valley Toastmasters meets at 6:30 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of every month. The meetings are held at Laduke Team Realty, 1271 S. Highway 160, Suite C. Power wheelchairs The Senior Wheels USA program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify. Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. If the patient's need is for use in the home, call 1-800-246-6010. Babies in need Stitches From the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, little sweaters and hats for babies in need. These items are donated to hospitals all over the country.
