Saddle West steps up with summer comedy
BY CHARLENE DEAN
Don't ever let anyone say there's nothing to do in Pahrump. It's the hottest season of the year here and even though the population dwindles in the heat, the entertainment schedule increases with fundraiser events, special outdoor venues and special entertainment catering to the locals. Tonight is Saddle West's turn. The showroom will be filled with laughter as patrons enjoy an all time favorite type of entertainment specific mostly to Saddle West -- the comedy show. The comedy acts of Kathleen Dunbar and Rob Sherwood are going to be onstage in two free shows at 6 and 8 p.m. Both entertainers are from Las Vegas. The history of Dunbar's career on her Web site states she starred in her own "Kathleen Dunbar's Divas of Comedy Show" for two years and that she "is a sitcom waiting to happen." Dunbar has captured the comedy award from the 2003 "Las Vegas Star Search" competition and in 2005, 2006 and 2007; she was awarded the "Excellence in Entertainment Sunrise Award" from the Entertainment Consumer's Exchange. "She is making her mark in Las Vegas and around the country," noted the Web site. "She has developed into a sarcastic edgy woman with attitude and humor. "Being a divorced mother has provided her with a quick wit and a realistic look at life. Her observation of the world is outrageous." Some of her influences have been Johnny Carson, Joan Rivers, Tracy Ullman and the late George Carlin. Rob Sherwood has been doing standup comedy for more than 10 years. And according to his biography on his Web site, "he has developed a charismatic stage presence that captivates his audience." Sherwood started out a musician and as an accomplished drummer, joined his first band at age 11. He has worked behind the scenes of show business as well. His work history has given him insight into the backstage workings of Las Vegas. Sherwood is "married with four children ... and relates to his audience with his family material. His audiences laugh at him, with him and most importantly, they laugh with themselves. "Sherwood has an opinion on topical issues and current events. His twisted viewpoint is entertaining. ...He loves performing and the audience loves his performance." From all appearances, the show will be entertainment on the lighter side of life. Reservations are not necessary, but a word to the wise advises to arrive early. These venues tend to fill quickly and even though there are two shows, the performances are only for tonight.
