LEGION Trojans remain in hunt
By DON McDERMOTT
Before the Pahrump Valley American Legion baseball team had its Silver Division against Las Vegas Western postponed Monday, the Trojans had played six games at home. Manager Brandon Bietar's team was 6-0 in the cozy, friendly confines of Honeysuckle Park, outscoring opponents 68-29, including a 12-11, 8-7 sweep of Henderson Coronado Thursday night. Unfortunately for the Trojans, they have to go on the road where hey are 0-6 and have surrendered 62 runs, while scoring 30. Last Wednesday, at Paul Meyer Park in Las Vegas, Pahrump was manhandled 17-2 and 13-7 by Henderson Foothill. Still, Pahrump Valley is within two games of a post-season playoff berth. At 6-6, the Trojans trail fourth-place Eldorado (8-4). Legacy and Sierra Vista are both 10-1, with Foothill at 10-3. All Silver Division teams play a 20-game schedule, with the top four finishers advancing to the playoffs. The double-elimination tournament will be be played July 29-Aug. 1 at Eldorado High School. The Las Vegas-area champion moves onto the Division II Central Plains tournament Aug. 13-17 at Pratt, Kan. Pahrump Valley's remaining games are against Legacy, Saturday at Paul Meyer Park (5 and 8 p.m.); July 16, at Honeysuckle Park vs. Chaparral (5 and 8 p.m.) and July 19, at Rivera Park vs. Shadow Ridge (5 and 8 p.m.). Western was 2-9 in the division, going into Monday's doubleheader. Legacy and Sierra Vista, in games played through the Fourth of July, were both 10-1. Chaparral was 2-9 and Shadow Ridge was 3-7. It's unlikely the Trojans will catch either Legacy or Sierra Vista; they are 4-1/2 games behind the co-leaders with eight starts remaining. And they are 3-1/2 games down to Foothill. Eldorado's two-game edge, however, is within reach. The Sundevils' remaining games are: *Thursday, vs. Bishop Gorman, 3-5; *Friday, at Shadow Ridge; * July 14, at Western; * July 17, at Coronado; * July 18, vs. Bishop Gorman; * July 22, vs. Legacy; * July 23, vs. Coronado; * July 25, at Cimarron-Memorial. In the sweep of Coronado, rising senior righthanded pitcher Mike Gonzalez got the save in the first game, pitching in relief of lefthander Brandon Uyeno. In the nightcap, Gonzalez worked three strong innings in relief of Jaret Holley to get the win against the Cougars. Pahrump Valley scored six runs in the first inning of the opener, but had to rally late to prevail. The winning run scored in the seventh when Joey McCaw doubled and scored on a two-out hit by Cody Nielsen. In the second game, the Trojans overcame 4-3 and 6-4 leads to prevail, scoring two unearned runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Over the last two innings, Gonzalez was roughed up by six hits, but the big righthander struck out six as he worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. In the seventh, Coronado had runners at second and third when Gonzalez got the final strikeout. The Trojans accomplished the sweep without All-State centerfielder Iggy Wagner and lefthanded ace Dax Duesing. "Both will be back next week," said Bietar. "Tonight, we got a big pickup from Joey (McCaw) and the defense." Ethan Wald, Cody Nielsen and Daimon Nelson had strong games, both offensively and defensiively.
