Fireworks a resounding success

Pahrump, thanks to Zambelli Fireworks Internationale, has done it again this Fourth of July.

The 22 minutes and three seconds of detonations and incendiaries sufficiently awed the packed crowd that plopped down to enjoy the show at Petrack Park Saturday, as evidenced by the continuous roar of approval that lasted for quite some time after the show.

As people packed up their lawn chairs and coolers, it wasn't uncommon to hear them already eagerly awaiting next year's show.

This year's show was bigger in just about every sense of the word.

John O'Brien, lead pyrotechnition for Zambelli, explained that this year's edition included more of the bigger shells instead of a larger quantity of smaller shells.

This was also the first year Lady Liberty, alight in fireworks, made an appearance (and that wasn't even the finale).

"It was a brand-new set piece," he said.

The set pieces, by the way, are hand-made by the crew.

About the only way to describe the final two minutes of the show would be to say there was a second sun in the sky reflecting faces in the crowd that were by turns awed, smiling or just gaping at the thunderous show taking place.

The only glitch in the show was the last song didn't play.

"The last two minutes were set to a rock and roll song," O'Brien said. "We were going to rock the town."

Even sans musical accompaniment, the mission was accomplished.

"Incoming!" was a cry heard from the crowd closest to the shooting site due to the wind kicking up and small pieces of shrapnel falling into the crowd.

"The park is just getting too small for the shows I'm doing," O'Brien said. "Next year we might have to move it back a little."
