B.A.D.D. seeks to put youth back on track

Dominic Gaccetta was a long-haired biker living in south-central Los Angeles when he found Jesus. He also learned church goers don't always practice what they preach.

"When I first went to church, the only one who shook my hand was the pastor, because he had to," Gaccetta said in a prepared news release.

In 1993, Gaccetta took the initiative for awareness by telling a crowd of worshippers to make their churches welcoming places, because the children of God come in many shapes and styles.

Gaccetta started the Born Again Delivered Disciples, or BADD, organization in 1993 as a remote ranch facility accepting individuals needing help. Since that time, BADD has helped more than 10,000 people by addressing the problems of homelessness, gangs, addiction and those who just need a fresh start.

At the heart of the method is discipline. The young men are up at 5:30 a.m., run three miles, pray for an hour and then attend a one-hour church service all before breakfast. School is six days a week.

Gaccetta calls his school a "life skills center. "We help them (the youth) see a new way to live ... so they can become awesome members of society," he said.

The school is accredited through the National Association of Private Schools and teaches a Bible-based curriculum. Though BADD is based in Los Angeles, they operate a remote campus in El Mirage, Calif., and are creating a missionary school in Arizona.

On July 26 and 27, BADD will do outreach at Honeysuckle Park on Saturday and Petrack Park on Sunday starting at 6 p.m.

The BADD team performs dances to Christian hip-hop and a style of dance called "crunk" or breakdance to such music as "Crunk in the Church House."

Gaccetta said the music is a way to relate to teens and make church "the most exciting place" to hang out.
