Don't forget the water, NDOW cautions

SPECIAL TO THE PVT

With daytime temperatures surging past 110 degrees, boaters and other outdoor recreationists are flocking to Lake Mead and Lake Mohave where they hope to find respite from the heat.

While most of these people will remember to take their sunscreen and life jackets, some will actually forget to bring drinking water, a mistake that can literally put one's life in jeopardy.

"It's very common for boaters to stop game wardens and ask them for water because they didn't bring any drinking water with them.

Perhaps these boaters think they won't need to bring their own water because they will be surrounded by it, but that's just not the case. It's so hot that dehydration is a very real concern," said Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesperson Doug Nielsen.

"Ironically, many of the boaters who forget their drinking water often have plenty of alcoholic beverages in their coolers. What some people don't understand is alcoholic beverages actually speed up the dehydration process. And if not addressed, dehydration can ultimately lead to death." he said.

The dehydration issue is not limited to boaters. It also is common among people who make day trips into the desert or nearby mountains.

When the effects of alcohol are combined with stressors such as heat and winds, it takes less alcohol to make a person impaired and cause them to lose some of the motor skills and judgment that might otherwise help them survive a day in the sun.

Filing a trip plan means telling a responsible adult where you are going, who you are going with, when you will leave and when you will return. A map and description of any vehicles should be included. Should something happen, this will give searchers a place to start looking along with a list of people to look for.
