Evening at the 'Coffee House'

It's time to break out the poodle skirt and the saddle oxfords and spend an evening at the local coffee house. No, there isn't a new business in town. The event referenced is the 4th annual "Blue Butterfly Coffeehouse" fundraiser sponsored by Nathan Adelson Hospice.

On Saturday, July 12, the events center at the Pahrump Nugget will be transformed to transport the public into the bygone era of the 1950s and 60s.

"We call the decor 'shabby-chic," said Tonya Brum, of Nathan Adelson Hospice. The only thing missing will be the jukebox.

The event is staged to be a variety show of local talent, most of which comes from either employees of the hospice or volunteers.

"Several of our nurses are good singers," said Brum. "We have a stand up comedienne and the Golden Monarch Council members are providing two skits."

Dan Rodriguez, president of the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce will emcee the show doing his own version of a format made famous by former king of late night TV, Johnny Carson. "This is a first," said Brum. "If you can picture Dan introducing memories of Karnak the Magnificent."

The variety show includes music from the era with vocals provided by nurses Roger Lim and Lorraine Baskeyfield; volunteers Peggy Thompson, who was a professional folk singer in the 60s and Brian Nelson; a duet by Jan Church and Pastor Lonnie Biggs, and Rev. Julie Platson on keyboards.

The comedy portion of the show will come in the form of poetry reading by nurse Anita Butler and volunteers Arlene Heidmeyer and Muriel Areno.

Linda Grover, a professional entertainer and local realtor, is a talented ventriloquist.

The Golden Monarch Council, directed by Willi Baer, will perform skits and the grand finale has everyone involved.

In between sets, Brum said there will be raffles, live auctions and a continuous silent auction to keep participants busy.

One of the items for the live auction is a remote controlled overly-large jeep donated by Saitta-Trudeau. The silent auction includes a gift basket donated by the Pahrump Nugget and a "Queen for a Day" spa package donated by CC's Beauty Zone. There are over 30 items in the silent auction donated by local businesses.

The Nugget is providing snacks and finger foods, sodas, iced tea, coffee (of course) and water. There will be no host bar.

Brum said she is still open to donations for raffles and auction items. There is still time to get involved.

The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 per person or $25 for two and they are on sale at Martinizing Dry Cleaning and CC's Beauty Zone.

Tickets may also be purchased from Nathan Adelson Hospice, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900.

Call Brum at 751-5601 for tickets, more information or to make a donation.
