Even in the desert, bugs are a constant aggravation for any homeowner.

John and Kerry Borkowski have just the answer when you use Bug Chasers to debug any part of your home or property. Operated out of their home, Bug Chasers offers hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Saturday.

Sunday is an on-call emergency only response, such as an ant invasion, but they are available.

The Borkowskis moved to Pahrump eight years ago to get away from the Las Vegas traffic and to enjoy a country lifestyle. They worked for other companies to gain their seven years of experience in the entomology field, took advantage of educational opportunities and obtained their license in the field.

As a team, they cover areas that most folks would get the creepy crawlies just thinking about.

John guarantees that the chemicals he uses are safe for pets and children yet strong enough to make sure bugs go toes up.

He does warn, however, that "buildup of the chemical can be toxic because it doesn't breakdown inside like it does outside. It depends on the chemical and how long it has been allowed to build up. The chemical is toxic to fish and birds. We don't spray if the owners have these."

Kerry said, "Ants love electricity, grease, soap, well connections, pet food and other things. They can attack your home if they find access to these items. I recommend that homeowners keep these things in Tupperware or other plastic containers.

"We don't mind our customers calling us for anything -- we are happy to help. We can offer education about bugs or come and help. We return all calls, and respond quickly if needed. Customer service is very important to us."

Their fee is $20 a month for up to 2,000 square feet, and $25 for areas above that size.

Spraying includes the garage, well house, and sheds if accessible.

Some things to keep in mind are that most bugs are nocturnal, especially in summer when they come out after sundown and before sunrise. Rain also brings them out (rain?) as they live in ground cracks, wood piles, and more.

One of the main threats is bark scorpions.

These are flesh-colored and can be up to four inches long. Their sting can be fatal. Baby bugs have stronger venom, which makes them more deadly.

While it is not in their area of expertise, they also advise folks to beware of the Mojave green rattlenake. Its bite is fatal, although it's not widely seen in the valley.

John continues to keep up to date on all changes in the industry by attending continuing education classes. He has one of the highest math scores at the Department of Agriculture and passed their required test the first time around, something that occurs infrequently.
