Prep basketball

Two weeks from today, the penultimate Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School basketball ratings will be published.

On Feb. 13, the final ratings will appear on a day right in the middle of the week when state playoff games are being contested.

By late night Feb. 16, only 32 teams will remain in contention for the big prize -- a state championship. Regional tournament titles will be contested Feb. 16; at the end of the day, only eight teams -- four boys, four girls -- will remain in each classification.

In Class 4-A girls and boys basketball, two Southern and two Northern teams advance to the state semifinals, to be played Feb. 21 in the Lawlor Events Center on the University of Nevada campus in Reno.

The formula is different in Class 3-A; only the Southern champion will move on to Reno, joining three Northern squads in the semifinals, to be played Feb. 22 at Lawlor.

In Classes 2-A and 1-A boys and girls basketball, two Southern and two Northern teams will move on to the final four Feb. 22. The 2-A semifinals will be played at North Valleys High School in Reno; the 1-A semis are at Sparks Spanish Springs. All four title games will be contested at Lawlor.

The ratings leaders this week:

Class 4-A -- Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, 19-2, boys; Gorman, 19-4, girls.

Class 3-A -- Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, 16-7, boys; Mesquite Virgin Valley, 20-2, girls;

Class 2-A -- Pershing County Lovelock, 15-3, boys; Needles, Calif., 20-3, girls;

Class A -- Lake Mead Christian Academy, 23-1, boys; Pahranagat Valley Alamo, 15-5, girls.

Pahrump Valley's girls, 18-7 going into a Thursday night game against Southern league game against Boulder City, is No. 3. The Trojan boys, 13-10, are No. 6.

But while these ratings are designed to generate comment, they only give you an idea of which teams to watch in the state tournament scene.
