GEORGE WILL

All the usual indicators dismal for the Republicans
WASHINGTON -- The first year of the 2008 campaign -- think about that -- has clearly established that the Republican Party's prospects are cloudy. Mike Huckabee has finished first and third, John McCain fourth and first, Romney second twice. Rudy Giuliani has been treading water, waiting for Florida, which on Jan. 29 will allocate more convention delegates (114) than Iowa, Wyoming and New Hampshire have combined (92). So, clinging to cliches as to a lifeline, Republicans congratulate themselves on how evenly the party's strengths, such as they are, are spread among their candidates.

Why good pundits go bad
The political pundits are well-trained in politics as usual.

Letters to the Editor

Beware the infomercial when taking a sick day
Even columnists catch a bug every now and again, probably because we, too, shop in grocery stores and malls among crowds of infected people. Everywhere one turns in January, there is a drippy nose, a coughing or sneezing mouth, red eyes or a chilled body bundled against the harsh temperatures of the department store.
