There is a new sound in town

There's a new band, with a new sound, trying hard to please the people of Pahrump. They will be performing every Wednesday night starting at 8 p.m., at the Around the World Lodge on North Highway 160 at Simpkins.

Trac-3 is really a musical group geared for the young people, although they are talented enough to perform songs from every genre.

Yon Harrison, founder of Trac-3, said, "We've been playing here for about a month and we draw a good crowd. The audience is all races, all ages and genders."

Their music can't be described as either this or that. The influence covers a really broad spectrum of styles and comes from artist like Limp Biskit, Nirvanna, P-Funk, The Isley Brothers, Earth Wind and Fire; and for the female member of the group, Kelly Clarkson.

Harrison and his cousin, known only as "Professor," have been playing together since 1985 and they have a lot of experience. "We've been musicians all of our lives," Harrison said. "We've toured with Anita Baker, Keith Sweat, Aretha Franklin, the Art Matthews Jazz Combo, Johnny Owens and with Calvin Owens in Europe."

Although most of their music is original, the group has been discussing how to best present themselves to a Pahrump crowd. "We were just talking the other day about doing at least two songs from every genre," Harrison said. "Starting next Wednesday, I think we'll be ready to do that."

Having spent time traveling between Detroit and Atlanta, Harrison and members of the group have worked musical production with R and B artists like TLC, Silk, Too Short and rapped with Jay-Z. They have been performing in California and Texas for the last two years.

After a last stop in Detroit to record a demo CD, the original members landed in Vegas not long ago and put together the rest of the band to form Trac-3. They've been performing in Vegas for First Friday's and in Dino's Lounge on the strip. Harrison said, "There will be more first Friday's, more gigs in Vegas."

The members live in Pahrump simply because it's more economical.

Harrison and the other band members are like most musicians. They hold "real" jobs. Harrison is a sales specialist for Pahrump Valley Auto Mall. "Tell the people I'd be pleased to help them out with a new or used car if they come and see me at the dealership," he said with a laugh.

Harrison is multi-talented as a musician too. He sings lead male vocals, plays saxophone, keyboards, bass and lead guitar.

Other members are Harrison's cousin, "Professor" on guitar, "Reign" the female member providing the lead vocals, "Mr. Khan," on keyboards, "scratch" and the rapper of the group and Ron Winters, a local man, on drums.

Reign is a bartender at Around the World Lodge, where the band performs.

This venue is less country and more everything else than any group performing in Pahrump. It should be worth the trip to hear them.
