Nye County District Court Judge John P. Davis has filed for re-election as Department I Fifth District Judge.

This is Davis' eighteenth year as a District Judge in Nye County, and he said the decision to run for re-election wasn't an easy one.

"It's something I've really been battling in my mind," Davis said. "I didn't make up my mind until last Thursday. Then around noon I just said, 'By golly, I'm not going to retire and went down to Carson City."

Davis explained his decision by simply stating, "I just don't want to retire."

"I don't think I'd be particularly satisfied as a senior judge. And I love what I do."

Davis spent five years as a Justice Court judge in Lyon County prior to serving in Nye County.

He earned his law degree at the University of California, Davis in 1972 and a bachelor's degree in mine engineering from the Colorado Mining School in 1956.

Although Davis ran unopposed for the seat in 2002, that won't be the case this election.

Deputy District Attorney Maria Zlotek filed and put her name on the ballot, and Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett has also said he will run.

As of yet the Department II race is slightly less contentious with only Judge Robert Lane having filed to run in the election.

District Judges serve a term of six years.
