MESQUITE -- The bad news first. Pahrump Valley's girls and boys basketball teams lost in a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League doubleheader here Friday.

The Lady Trojans, down 13 points going into the final period, pulled to within three, but lost 42-38 and fell to 1-1 in the league and 16-7 in all games.

Virgin Valley, led by senior guard Courtney Spawn's five 3-pointers and 18 points overall, is 2-0 South and 18-2 in all games.

The PVHS boys led 28-27 midway through the third quarter, but the Bulldogs, led by Doug Hafen and Anthony Morris, powered Virgin Valley to a 60-43 victory.

The Trojans, who have scored only 77 points in two league starts, dropped to 0-2 South, 12-10 in all games. Virgin Valley squared its league record at 1-1.

The good news: Part One.

Four of the Trojans' final six league games will be played at home ... in the main gym. The project to replace a water-damaged court and do some much-needed cosmetic work is to be completed Monday, which means the long-awaited PVHS 'home opener' will be Jan. 24 against Boulder City.

Other home games will be played Jan. 25 vs. Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, Feb. 1 vs. Virgin Valley and Feb. 8 vs. Moapa Valley.

The Trojans go to Moapa Valley Jan. 22 and Boulder City Feb. 5.

Good news: Part Two

The Trojans don't have to travel to Mesquite again to play basketball. Enough said ... for the moment.

Pahrump Valley's girls, down 15-4, 23-17 and 37-24 at the quarters, went on a 12-2 run to close to 39-36 with 1:05 left in the game. A turnover by the Trojans at 0:46 gave the Bulldogs a chance to recover.

Down the stretch, Spawn and Mandi Fowles combined to make three of four free throws to push Virgin Valley's lead to 42-36. Senior post Megan Meads scored at the buzzer for the Trojans' final points.

Meads and guard Brittney Lindgren scored 11 points each, with junior center Kristi Daffer netting 12 for the Trojans, who have lost seven of their last 10 starts.

Pahrump Valley, behind 23-14 at the half, scored 14 of the first 16 points in the third quarter to jump ahead 28-25. But the Bulldogs went on a 10-4 run and led 35-32 after three periods.

Hafen, Michael Bartlett and 6-6 Anthony Morris did most of the work in Virgin Valley's 25-point breakout in the final eight minutes. Bartlett had 13 points, while Hafen had 10 and Morris 12 to go with nine blocked shots.

Marvin Weekly had 15 points and Darius Dolly 10 for the Trojans.

Pahrump Valley, which played at Pahranagat Valley Alamo Tuesday night, will be idle until Tuesday, when the Trojans travel to Overton Moapa Valley for a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League doubleheader.
