LAS VEGAS -- Pahrump Valley clinched at least a tie for its fourth straight Southern Nevada Class 3-A regular-season wrestling title Wednesday, defeating Mesquite Virgin Valley 50-21 at Faith Lutheran.

The Trojans are 6-0 in the league (21-3 in all duals) after beating the Bulldogs (4-2 league) with two duals left.

The Trojans face Faith Lutheran and Moapa Valley in their final league matches Jan. 30 at home. On Feb. 2, the Trojans will host the Southern regionals, with the state tournament scheduled Feb. 8-9 at Overton Moapa Valley.

Pahrump Valley traveled Thursday to Spring Creek, where the Trojans will compete in the Kiwanis Invitational today and Saturday. More than 20 teams are entered in the individual-bracket formatted tournament, which starts at 3 p.m. today and 8 a.m. Saturday.

"This tournament will give us a chance to see some of the Northern 3-A wrestlers," said Craig Rieger, the Pahrump Valley coach. "We know about the kids from Spring Creek (four-time Nevada state champion), but we hope that wrestlers from Yerington, Winnemucca (Lowry) and other Northern 3-A schools will be there."

Minico, Idaho, which won the 2007 Kiwanis championship, will compete, along with some Northern Nevada 4-A teams.

Virgin Valley forfeited three matches to start the match down 18-0. In the remaining 11 duals, the Trojans won seven to outpoint the Bulldogs 32-21 in head-to-head competition.

Winning for the Trojans were:

103 pounds -- Elliot Owens, 12-11 decision; (Owens is 22-7 in all matches).

112 -- Elias Armendariz, pin 1:18 (31-3).

130 -- Chris DeMille, pin 2:50.

140 -- Kyle Abreu, by forfeit.

145 -- Maverik Manning, by forfeit.

152 -- James Chapman,by forfeit (29-5).

171 -- Zach Weldon, tech-fall, 17-1 (33-2).

189 -- Joey Colucci, pin 2:33 (19-12).

215 -- Pierce Henkel, 6-1 decision, OT (25-7).

285 -- Frank Lopez, 6-1 decision (31-3).

For coach Leon Durbin's Bulldogs, the winners were Sawyer Goff, 160, pin 2:36; Stetson Ruth, 125, pin 1:42; Harley Leavitt, 135, decision 3-0 and Aaron Rappleye, 119, pin, 3:46.

Virgin Valley is in the High Desert Classic at Tonopah today and Saturday. Also in that tournament are 4-A Fallon and 2-A Battle Mountain, along with the Pahrump Valley JVs.

"Virgin Valley won the Taggart Duals (at Moapa Valley) last weekend, and they were second to (Las Vegas 4-A) Spring Valley in the Growler, so we know Durbin has a good team," said Rieger.
