Prep basketball

There are so many excellent boys and girls teams in the South, it's difficult to rank them in the Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School Basketball ratings.

In both the boys' and girls ratings, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman's Gaels are No. 1. Both teams are having excellent seasons, playing against difficult opponents. The Gorman boys are 15-2, while the two-time defending state champion Gorman girls are 15-3.

Ranked No. 2 in the boys' 4-A top 10 is Mojave, 16-1. No. 2 in the girls' rankings is Centennial, 16-3.

In Class 3-A, Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, 12-6, is first in the boys ratings, with Yerington, 17-1, topping the girls' list.

Yerington's boys, 12-3, are No. 2, and Dayton's girls, 7-0, are second.

Pahrump Valley's girls, 16-6, are ranked third, while the PVHS boys, 12-9, are fifth. Mesquite Virgin Valley's girls are ranked No. 4.

Spring Creek won its first two Northern League starts and moved into fifth place in the 3-A girls ratings, despite being under .500 at 5-6.

Needles, Calif., has the top-ranked teams in both the boys' and girls' divisions in 2-A. Lincoln County's boys and West Wendover's girls hold down the second spot.

Lake Mead Christian Academy's boys, 20-1, are No. 1 in Class A and defending state champion Las Vegas Trinity Christian, 11-5, is at No. 2.

Las Vegas Mountain View Christian's girls lost 63-53 to 2-A Lincoln County, but the Saints, 9-3, were an easy choice to lead the 1-A girls' ratings. Pahranagat Valley Alamo, 9-4, is second.

The Times ratings will appear each Friday through Feb. 8. The final regular-season lists will be published Feb. 13, during the week of the regional playoffs.
