High Desert wrestling starts today

Tonopah High School's wrestling team will host the High Desert Classic Invitational tournament today and Saturday, with 14 teams competing.

Action begins at 3 p.m. today and at 9 a.m. Saturday in the high school gym. Pahrump Valley's junior varsity, coached by Andy Schneider, will compete in the tournament.

Entered are the Muckers, along with Class 3-A power Mesquite Virgin Valley and perennial 2-A title threat Battle Mountain.

Other teams include Class A Laughlin, Round Mountain, Indian Springs, Pahranagat Valley Alamo and Spring Mountain; 2-A Yerington Rite of Passage, Dayton Silver Stage and Las Vegas The Meadows; Las Vegas Faith Lutheran and Truckee (Calif.) and 4-A Churchill County Fallon.

Tonopah wrestlers, coached by Ron Pearson, include Kristian Johnson (135 pounds, 8-2 record, five pins), Cody Serfoss (140, 20-2, 12 pins), Kevin Valentine (112, 16-3, 10 pins), Robert Ashbey (125, 10-8, eight pins) and Jerrett Tisue (103, 11-5, five pins).
