Calendar

The January class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Jan. 11 -- Early intervention explore and learn play group, 11 a.m.

Library calendar

The Pahrump Community Library is located at 701 East Street, and is hosting the following events in January:

Jan. 12 -- Family craft, 10 a.m. This month's project is a penguin igloo catch game, materials provided.

Jan. 15 -- Favorite Author Book Club, 1:30 p.m. This month's selection is Louisa May Alcott and her book, "Little Women." The meeting is free and open to all.

Jan. 17 -- Adult craft class, 1 p.m., guest speaker to discuss coin collecting, sign-up by Jan. 15, class is free and open to the public. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Computer classes are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and include introduction to computers, beyond basics, Internet and email and genealogy. Times vary and sign-up must be in person at the library. No sign-ups by phone. Classes are free and space is limited.

Friendship Club dinner dates

The Pahrump Singles Friendship club will have dinner tonight, 5 p.m., Jan. 11 at the Last Chance Saloon.

Building Code training

There will be a training class for anyone who uses International Building Code, 8 a.m. to noon, Jan. 11 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

This will be training to transition from the 1997 IBC to the new 2008 IBC.

Contractors, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Plan Checkers, Building Inspectors and Design Professionals should plan to attend.

The class will be presented by Charles Abbot Associates.

Special Olympics

The Special Olympics basketball team, Pahrump Heat, will be playing at J.G. Johnson Elementary school 4:30-6 p.m., starting Jan. 11.

They will play every Friday for the next 12 weeks.

Benefit spaghetti dinner

There will be a benefit dinner for Daniel Murphy from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17 at J.G. Johnson.

Daniel was in a quad accident over Thanksgiving weekend and was in a coma and ICU for three weeks. He was then moved into a rehab center.

Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Murphy family to help with medical expenses.

Dinner will include spaghetti, garlic bread and dessert.

A cake auction will take place during dinner.

The cost for the dinner is free but donations will be gratefully accepted.

Pet adoption

There will be a pet adoption event, 10-2 p.m., Jan. 12 at Hollywood Video, 240 S. Hwy. 160.

The adoption fee for dogs is $64 and the fee for cats is $36.

Vision impaired meeting

The monthly meeting of the Pahrump Chapter of Vision Impaired Persons will be at 1 p.m., Jan. 18 at the Pahrump Senior Center, 1370 W. Basin Road.

All interested parties are invited to attend.

These meetings provide interaction and information for individuals that have difficulty seeing or suffer from degenerative vision loss.

Learn how a legally blind person can obtain personal property tax relief, free telephone directory assistance, veteran assistance for those who have served active duty and perhaps additional VA compensation for service connected vision loss.

Nathan Adelson Hospice has volunteer training classes scheduled 9-5 p.m., Jan. 14-15, in the conference room at 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900.

Women motorcyclists

A new group of women motorcyclists is forming. The first meeting will be at 1 p.m., Jan. 19 at the Subway on Highway 372, and they will continue to meet every third Thursday of the month.

Golden years pageant

The Ms. Senior Golden Years USA invites the lovely ladies of Pahrump who have reached 60 to enter the 2008 pageant.

A fashion show, luncheon and silent auction will be held Feb. 23 at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino to introduce the contestants to the board of directors and the queen's court.

Host families sought

NSW PEACE Program, a non-profit and CSIET approved program is seeking families to host high school students from Brazil, Columbia, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany for the 2008 fall semester.

The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August to spend five to 10 months while attending the local high school.

Whether you are single, retired, have small children or no children, you can have a great experience hosting an international teen.

Students are pre-screened, speak English and look forward to learning about our culture while teaching us about theirs.

They have medical insurance and spending money to cover clothing, school supplies and entertainment.

Host families are not paid, but may be able to claim a $50 per month tax deduction for charitable contributions.

All the students require is a bed, meals and a caring family.

Republican caucus

The Nye County Republican Party Central Committee will host the Republican Caucus and Precinct Meeting between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jan. 19, at the Rosemary Clarke Middle School, 4201 N. Blagg Rd.

All Pahrump Valley registered Republicans only are welcome to attend and participate in the caucus presidential straw poll and the precinct meeting.

Those who wish to just vote in the caucus straw poll are welcome to do so and leave once they cast their votes.

Voting will be open from 9 a.m. until 12 noon.

Those who wish to participate in the precinct meeting are welcome to stay.

All People's Breakfast

The MLK committee will have the 6th annual All People's Breakfast scholarship fundraiser at 8:30 a.m., Jan. 21 at the Pahrump Nugget.

The breakfast is in honor of the late Martin Luther King Jr.

There will be a silent auction, raffles, entertainment and a wonderful breakfast.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Children 10 and under eat free.

SNAPS is looking for registered feeders.

They will assist with spay/neutering, vaccinations, trapping and food when available at no charge.

Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit

VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas.

VHRU maintains a web site that describes the mission and provides information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization.

Obama mock caucus

The Obama campaign will hold a mock caucus at 5 p.m., Jan. 12 at the Obama for America headquarters, 3250 S. Hwy. 160, Suite 9-B.

Looking for two men

Actors and production people needed for the PAC musical, "The Spitfire Grill."

Show dates are in March, rehearsals are in progress.

Needed: two men, one singer (baritone range, a man's man type, no dancing); one non-speaking role, able to portray a looming presence but appear shy as well.

Also needed: costume coordinator, stage manager, makeup artist and light crew.

Quilts charity fund drive

Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501(c)(3) charity, is looking for people to share their sewing talent and basic quilting to make quilts for adults with cancer.

As supply costs skyrocket for shipping and handling, the charity is in great need of batting and backing.

In Nye County, many residents are being treated for cancer. If you want to donate a quilt, it should be at least 50 x 50 or larger, any pattern and color and should fit most home washers and dryers.

Pahrump area includes Beatty, Amargosa, Death Valley, Tonopah, Sandy Valley, Shoshone and Tecopa.

Teen night

The Nye County Communities Coalition and St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church will host a teen night, 6-9 p.m., Jan. 25 at Seemore's Too!

Middle school through high school aged students are invited to an evening of free food, karaoke and games.

Craft supplies needed

A group of volunteers in Pahrump are making items for our senior shut-ins and our soldiers in Iraq.

We need unused and unwanted craft supplies and yarn. Volunteers will make the supplies into useful items.

The group will be making assorted Christmas tree ornaments and stockings to be filled. For our soldiers, there is a national group that fills and ships the stockings.

Black yarn is needed for helmet liners for our troops.

Other yarns are needed for scarves and slippers. Socks of any color can be used for our senior shut-ins and those in the local nursing home.

Two hundred stockings will be made to fill for Pahrump residents for Christmas 2008.

Late January there will be meetings to make items. This is an informal group and no membership is required.

Hawaiian club

We are looking for Hawaiian Islanders interested in starting a local Hawaiian club in Pahrump.

Wal-Mart Wall of Heros

If you have a picture of someone who has served or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the south wall, bring an 8 x 10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk.

This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. All photos taken to Wal-Mart will stay at Wal-Mart.

Model aviators meeting

The Pahrump Model Aviators Club holds a monthly meeting at 9 a.m., the second Saturday of the month at Desert View Regional Medical Center, lower level across from the cafeteria.

Anyone interested in learning about R/C model airplanes is invited to attend.

They are members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, a national organization of 2,500 clubs and 170,000 members.

Toys for Tots thanks

Successful communities are built by people working together, helping out in times of need.

MCL Detachment 1199, along with the Holiday Task Force are proud to present a variety of important programs and services for the needy families of Nye County by providing food, clothing and Toys for Tots, resulting in a Merry Christmas for 2007.

The Marine Corps motto is Semper Fidelis, meaning always faithful, and the Pahrump Marines' Toys for Tots program wants to be faithful to all the children of Nye County, delivering joy and happiness.

Thanks to all detachment marines and the many volunteers for their help in making this program a success.
