Murray, McDonald retain slots
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
The saying that all politics is local rang particularly true in Pahrump last Tuesday. As evening fell and the nation waited for the presidential primary results to trickle in from New Hampshire, the Pahrump Town Board was voting in new officers at its Jan. 8 meeting. Laurayne Murray was re-elected chairman in a 4-1 vote from which Don Rust curiously abstained. Rust did not give a reason for his abstention. John McDonald will also be keeping his post from last year as vice chairman in a unanimous vote. Rust also abstained from the vote that re-elected him as the board's clerk. The board also named liaison positions to the town's various advisory boards, which remain the same from last year with the exception of John McDonald being appointed the liaison to the recently-formed Pahrump Veterans' Memorial Advisory Board. The town's advisory board memberships were not approved, however, due to the back-up list not including the tourism advisory board or the Pahrump Veterans' Memorial Advisory Board. Murray asked the membership renewals be tabled until after a special meeting to be held by the board Saturday, Jan. 12, that will discuss advisory board objectives. Claudia Knight, Linda DeMeo and Sophia Liakopoulos were acknowledged by the town board by virtue of three proclamations acknowledging their community service on behalf of the Martin Luther King Committee. The proclamations also distinguish Monday, Jan. 21, as the date of the All People's Breakfast Celebration and recognition for Outstanding Community Service Day. |
