Keating re-elected schools' chairman
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
The Nye County school board had its first meeting of the new year on Thursday, Dec. 3 and elected its officers for the new year. Dennis Keating was re-elected as the board's president and J.E. "Doc" McNeely was voted vice president, replacing Harold Tokerud. Tracy Ward will serve another year as the board's clerk. In other district matters, the board approved revisions to the fiscal year 2007-2008 budget. The changes to the budget had nothing to do with Gov. Jim Gibbons' recent 4.5 percent reduction in state education funding but simply reflected a change in the money allocated to the district by the state via the distributive school account. The district's funding, which is based on enrollment, was cut as fewer students than projected were enrolled. That, however, was offset by a larger than originally thought opening fund balance, which ultimately resulted in an increase in the general fund of $157,822. Roberts also announced that Congressman Dean Heller, R-Nev., informed him the district will be awarded $78,000 for technology upgrades. A new completion date was announced for the new Ron and Floyd Charlotte Elementary School, to be located on Jane Street. It is now expected to be done July 16. Amargosa Elementary School will receive a donation of 1,000 books for its library. Bob Whimpey, director of maintenance and operations, announced that repairs on the Pahrump Valley High School gym will be finished Jan. 21. The gym floor was damaged when heavy rains caused flooding last September. |
