3-A LEAGUE SEASON UNDERWAY PV girls split games with Tech, Hurricane
By BRIAN KUNZI
LAS VEGAS -- The Pahrump Valley Lady Trojans defeated the homestanding Vo-Tech Roadrunners 50-49 Friday, with the outcome not certain until a last second basket by Tech was changed from a 3-point basket to a deuce. Saturday, the Trojans lost 53-37 to visiting Hurricane, Utah, in the Ninth Grade Academy gym. Tuesday, Pahrump Valley, 15-6, opened the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League season in Las Vegas against Faith Lutheran. Friday, the Trojans travel to Mesquite to battle the 16-2 Lady Bulldogs of Virgin Valley. The game stayed close throughout, providing an excellent test for the the Trojans, who started slowly but fought back to take a 21-18 halftime lead. Eight straight points to start the second half pushed the lead to 29-18 before the Roadrunners rallied to close the gap to three points entering the final period. A three point basket by Brittney Lindgren with four minutes remaining opened the Trojan lead to 45-42. The score was tied at 45-45 and again at 47-47 with 1:23 left in the game. Megan Meads was fouled after making a basket to open a 50-47 lead with 1:23 remaining. The Lady Trojans were able to work the clock down to 15.1 seconds, forcing the Roadrunners to foul. The missed front end of a one-and-one free throw set the stage for the final dramatics. Following the missed free throw, Tech attempted a near half-court shot that banked off the board and rim and resulted in a long rebound for the Roadrunners. A shot was quickly thrown up from what appeared to be a few feet inside the 3-point line, which caught nothing but net. One official instantly raised her hands indicating the shot was a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. The officials quickly huddled and determined the shot was only a two pointer allowing the Lady Trojans to escape with the hard fought victory. Pahrump Valley improved to 15-5, while Vo-Tech fell to 9-3. The Lady Trojans were led by Kristy Daffer whose aggressive play lead to 17 points and 12 rebounds. After a slow first half, Megan Meads closed strong and chipped in 15 points and 12 rebounds. The inside play was complemented by the guards, with Brittany Orr and Alyson Kunzi contributing four assists each. Against Hurricane (8-2), the Trojans trailed 12-8, 22-12 and 40-21 at the quarters, but pulled to within 43-34 in the fourth. Led by 5-10 junior guard Megan Clyde, the Tigers went on a 10-3 run to clinch the victory. Clyde finished with 20 points, including four 3-point field goals. Shana Vaifurna added 15 for the Tigers, who finished with eight field goals from beyond the 19-foot, 9-inch arc. Megan Meads scored 13 points and Brittney Lindgren added 10 for the Trojans. Pahrump Valley's boys, 12-8, were idle last week. They returned to action Tuesday night at Faith Lutheran, and Friday, coach Lonnie Shereck's team will be in Mesquite to take on the 9-8 Bulldogs. That girls-boys twin bill starts at 6 p.m. Pahrump Valley will not play in the main high school gym until after Jan. 21. The work on the gym floor is to be completed by that date; it had to be reconstructed because of damage caused by water during a storm in September.
