Class 3-A hoop openers Tuesday at Faith Lutheran

Pahrump Valley's high school boys' basketball team, 12-8, returns to the hardwood Tuesday at Southern Nevada Class 3-A League rival Las Vegas Faith Lutheran.

The Pahrump Valley High School girls' basketball team, 14-5, returns to action Saturday in the Ninth Grade Academy gym, facing Hurricane, Utah, at 6:30 p.m.

The Bob Hopkins-coached Lady Trojans have been idle since going 1-4 in the Las Vegas Classic last week at Centennial. Hurricane is 8-2, after a 70-41 win against Parowan, Utah, Saturday.

In the 2006-2007 season, homestanding Hurricane came from behind in the fourth quarter to edge the Trojans, 30-28.

Pahrump Valley's girls and boys open the 2007-2008 Southern Nevada Class 3-A League season Tuesday at Las Vegas Faith Lutheran. On Jan. 11, the PV teams are at Mesquite Virgin Valley for another league twin bill.

The varsity doubleheaders begin at 6 p.m. each day.

Faith Lutheran's girls, coached by Jennifer Karner, were 9-6 in games through Dec. 31. Their quality wins were against defending Nevada 3-A champion Spring Creek (53-39), 41-39 against Class 4-A Henderson Foothill and 59-50 against Winnemucca Lowry.

The Crusaders lost 85-23 to two-time state 4-A champion Las Vegas Bishop Gorman and they fell 51-50 to streaking 1-A power Mountain View Christian.

Megan Smith, a 5-9 guard, is Faith's go-to player, with Seanie Peterson another player to watch, along with guard Maddy Yeghiazarian. The Crusaders were state semifinalists in the 2006-2007 season.

Faith Lutheran's boys were 8-6 through Dec. 31, but coach Bret Walter's Crusaders have been playing another dynamic schedule. They are 4-3 against Class 4-A opponents, including a 65-51 loss to Bishop Gorman and a 57-55 setback at Las Vegas Mojave.

Led by 6-7 Diontea Wright, 6-4 Connor Maloney and guard Max Done,Faith defeated North 4-A power Douglas Minden 66-63 and Las Vegas Desert Pines 80-70.

Virgin Valley's girls are 14-3 under the direction of coach Brent Leavitt; the Bulldogs are 6-2 against out-of-state opponents.

Courtney Spawn, a free-wheeling guard, keeps the Bulldogs competitive.

The Bulldog boys, coached by Kirk Brotherson, are 8-7. They are 0-2 against 1-A power Lake Mead Christian Academy and they fell 52-36 to state 1-A champion Las Vegas Trinity.

NOTES -- Boulder City's girls and boys teams are in the Sierra Vista Invitational, which started Wednesday ... The Eagle girls lost 65-43 to Times Class 2-A ratings leader Needles, Calif., and 90-60 to 4-A Las Vegas Legacy, while the BC boys fell to 4-A rivals Henderson Coronado (57-48) and Las Vegas Arbor View (57-55) ... Moapa Valley's girls lost 49-46 to 4-A Las Vegas and 63-36 to host Sierra Vista Wednesday ... Bracket play continues today in both boys' and girls' divisions at Sierra Vista.
