Prep basketball

The only way anyone can discuss the first Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School basketball ratings is to ... well ... have an open mind.

There have been not enough heads-up meetings to determine a definitive Top 10. And while there are some really solid teams playing, there are only four or five teams in the Silver State which have displayed some semblance of domination.

The No. 1-ranked Class 4-A boys team is Las Vegas Bishop Gorman at 14-2, with Mojave and Canyon Springs close on the heels of the Gaels. Gorman lost 71-63 to Arlington, Va., Archbishop O'Connell and 60-53 to Punahou, Hawaii, in major invitational tournaments.

Ranked second in the boys' top 10 is Las Vegas Mojave, 11-1, and completing the top four are Las Vegas Canyon Springs, 8-1, and Reno, 6-5 in the month-old season.

Leading the girls' top 10 is defending state champion Gorman, 15-3 against mostly nationally-ranked opponents. Coach Sheryl Krmpotich's team was 31-4 last season, enroute to a second straight state 4-A championship. The team is led by Texas signee Ashley Gayle, a 6-foot-4 senior forward.

A close second are the Centennial's Bulldogs, who averaged more than 80 points per game last week in going 6-0 to win the Las Vegas Classic. Completing the top four are Sparks Reed, 10-4, and Reno, 13-2.

In Class 3-A boys, two-time defending state champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, 9-6, is No. 1, with Yerington, 12-3, second; Dayton, 7-3, third and Incline, 10-3, fourth.

In 3-A girls, Yerington, 12-1, is first, with Dayton, 7-0, second; Pahrump Valley, 14-5, third, and Mesquite Virgin Valley, 14-3, fourth.

Needles, Calif., leads the boys 2-A ratings at 10-1. Lincoln County, 9-3, is second, with Pershing County Lovelock, 11-2, third and Yerington Silver State Academy, 9-4, fourth.

In 2-A girls, the top four are Lovelock, 10-3, first; Battle Mountain, 9-4, second; Needles, 10-2, third, and West Wendover, 10-6, fourth.

Lake Mead Christian Academy, 17-1, tops the boys' Class A rankings, while Las Vegas Mountain View Christian, 8-2, is the top-ranked 1-A girls' team.

The top four in boys is completed by defending state champion Trinity Christian, 9-4; Pahranagat Valley Alamo, 7-4, and Virginia City, 9-3. In the top four for the 1-A girls are Alamo, 7-4; Owyhee, 8-5, and Wells, 11-3.

The Times ratings will be published each Friday through Feb. 8, with the final lists being reported Feb. 13, during the week when the state retional tournaments are being played.
