Disabled American Vets The Disabled American Vets will hold the monthly Friday Dinner from 5-7 p.m., Jan. 4 at the VFW Hall on Homestead Road. Church grand opening Central Valley Baptist Church would like to invite the public to the official grand opening celebration on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 3170 S. Blagg Road. Benefit spaghetti dinner There will be a benefit dinner for Daniel Murphy from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17 at J.G. Johnson. Daniel was in a quad accident over Thanksgiving weekend and was in a coma and ICU for three weeks. He was then moved into a rehab center. Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Murphy family to help with medical expenses. Dinner will include spaghetti, garlic bread and dessert. A cake auction will take place during dinner. Hospice cell phone collection program Nathan Adelson Hospice is still working with Collective Good collecting unused cell phones to raise funds and to save the environment. This ongoing project is being reignited for 2008 with the hopes of clearing everyone's closets and dresser drawers of old cell phones. Drop off places for cell phones have been identified and collection boxes put in place for the convenience of everyone looking for a way of disposing unwanted, out-of-date cell phones. Babies in need Stitches From the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, little sweaters and hats for babies in need. These items are donated to hospitals all over the country. Free drug tests Teen Care provides free drug tests for the children of concerned parents and guardians. The test detects marijuana, cocaine, meth, opiates, amphetamines and more. Craft supplies needed A group of volunteers in Pahrump are making items for our senior shut-ins and our soldiers in Iraq. We need unused and unwanted craft supplies and yarn. Volunteers will make the supplies into useful items. The group will be making assorted Christmas tree ornaments and stockings to be filled. For our soldiers, there is a national group that fills and ships the stockings. Black yarn is needed for helmet liners for our troops. Other yarns are needed for scarves and slippers. Socks of any color can be used for our senior shut ins and those in the local nursing home. Two hundred stockings will be made to fill for Pahrump residents for Christmas 2008. Quilts charity fund drive Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501(c)(3) charity, is looking for people to share their sewing talent and basic quilting to make quilts for adults with cancer. As supply costs skyrocket for shipping and handling, the charity is in great need of batting and backing In Nye County, many residents are being treated for cancer. If you want to donate a quilt, it should be at least 50 x 50 or larger, any pattern and color and should fit most home washers and dryers. Angels Have Wheels All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. Power wheelchairs The Senior Wheels USA program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify. Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. Retired/senior program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers 24 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. Senior Companions Low-income seniors age 60 or over can earn $212 a month, tax-free, by volunteering for Senior Companions, a program that provides companionship, socialization and transportation to other seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks. Adult literacy The Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St., offers free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults who struggle with reading. Animal shelter needs volunteers The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter or in the spay/neuter clinic. People who love animals and who want to learn new skills should stop by the Nye County Animal Shelter, 171 N. Kittyhawk Dr., or call 751-7020. VA van A van is available to veterans needing transportation to the Veterans Administration Clinic in Pahrump. The van operates 8-1 p.m. Monday through Thursday. High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists The High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists Society for adults meets every Tuesday from 11-2 p.m. at Seemores' Too on Highway 160. Prescription meds assist Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance. Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies. Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Hwy. 160, Suite 4, or call 751-7095. Marine Corps League of Pahrump Active, reserve, retired and former marines are eligible for membership in the Greater Marine Corps League of Pahrump, Detachment No. 1199. Also, FMF Navy Corpsmen are eligible to join as well. Meetings are held at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month at the VFW Post on Homestead Road.
