GBC begins registration

ELKO -- The holidays are in the rear view mirror and most classes are set to begin at Great Basin College Jan. 19.

Registration for spring 2008 is underway, and according to John Patrick Rice, GBC's director of institutional advancement, the process is simple.

"Students can register a couple of different ways," Rice said. "The simplest way is to log on to our Web site at www.gbcnv.edu and follow the easy steps to register online. Or students may stop by campuses and centers in Battle Mountain, Elko, Ely, Pahrump or Winnemucca."

Academic advisors at each campus site can assist with registration. Advisors can assist students who are beginning or continuing their education, or launching a career.

Rice said that the advisors provide a valuable service to students. "They will help you to establish a program of study, choose your first classes and find money for your education. They're very thoughtful and will put you on the right track," he said.

Once a student is enrolled, advisors can help students look further into the jobs and career opportunities their studies may present, according to Rice.

"The financial challenges of going to school don't stop after you've started, either, and advisors can help you work with the financial aid office to find ways to finance your education."

Whether a student decides to study full-time or part-time, the college offers several options for study. "In addition to our traditional schedule, we have a schedule of late starting classes you can enroll in now. We also offer dozens of online courses."

Studying online gives a student an incredible amount of flexibility. Evening and weekend classes are also available, as well as "compressed courses" that allow students to complete requirements in just a few weeks, Rice said.
