Six No. 1s claim titles
Six of the eight No. 1-ranked teams in the final Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School Basketball ratings won state championships last weekend in Reno. They were: Lake Mead Christian Academy, 33-1, boys Class A ... the Eagles defeated No. 6 Owyhee and No. 3 Las Vegas Trinity to win their first state title. Owyhee, girls Class A ... The defending state champion Braves downed No. 2 Pahranagat Valley Alamo and No. 3 Las Vegas Mountain View Christian to repeat. Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, boys 3-A ... The Crusaders made it four straight titles by beating No. 2 Incline and No. 4 Dayton at the Lawlor Center in Reno. Yerington, girls 3-A ... The Lions defeated No. 5 Winnemucca Lowry and unranked Truckee, Calif., to claim the title ... No. 2 Pahrump Valley lost to Truckee in the semifinals, 51-43 in two overtimes. Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, girls 4-A ... The Gaels made it three consecutive state championships by beating No. 4 Sparks Reed and No. 2 Reno. Needles, Calif., girls 2-A ... The Mustangs got the title by beating No. 3 Pershing County Lovelock and No. 5 Lincoln County. In boys Class 4-A, No. 1 Bishop Gorman lost in the regional semifinals, leaving the way clear for No. 2 Reno to win its second championship in three seasons. The Huskies defeated unranked Las Vegas Cheyenne 76-72 in the finals. In boys Class 2-A, No. 1 Yerington Rite of Passage lost to No. 2 Lincoln County in the state semifinals. The Lynx went on to beat No. 5 Needles for the title. |
