Youth art month

The Pahrump Community Library will be displaying artwork by local artist age 18 and younger.

If you would like your work displayed, bring it to the library after Feb. 25.

Work must be clearly labeled with artists name, age and title on the front and telephone number on the back or bottom.

All types of art are being accepted, including drawings, paintings, crayon, sculpture, etc.

Depending on the number of items received, displays may rotate.

Library staff will make every effort to secure the items, but cannot be held responsible for damage or theft.

Work may be picked-up after March 31, and works not claimed by April 15, will be discarded. Call 727-5930, ext. 17 for more information.

Bible study

The Pahrump Valley Republican Women are hosting a Lincoln Day dinner Feb. 29, at Mountain Falls Golf Club. Governor Jim Gibbons and First Lady Dawn Gibbons will be the guests of honor.

EAA chapter meeting

The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 1160 will hold the next monthly meeting at 10 a.m., March 1, at Phil Shallenberger's hangar, corner of Helicopter Road and Jet Road in the Calvada Aeropark.

The program will feature a speaker from Nellis AFB, who will talk about avoiding midair collision in the airspace around Nellis.

4-H open house

The Southern Nye County 4-H will hold an open house, 10-2 p.m., March 1, at the 4-H barn, corner of Calvada and Dandelion.

Exhibits for sheep, pigs, goats, chickens and rabbits, along with informational booths on clogging, cake decorating, Junior Master Gardening and quilting will be available. There will be demonstrations by the horse master, livestock and horsemanship clubs.

The entire community of Artesia is holding a garage sale to benefit the Artesia Community Center.

Obedience club training

The Pahrump Valley Obedience Club is offering a six week training class.

Classes will be held starting 8 a.m., March 8.

Sign-up for classes will be held 7 p.m., March 4 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Rebuilding Together with Pahrump, formerly Christmas in April, wants to help those with limited income needing home repairs.

Kiwanis Black Tie Affair

The Ms. Senior Nye County Pageant for 2008 will be held April 4-5, at Saddle West Hotel and Casino.

The winner of the pageant will continue to the Ms. Senior Nevada State Pageant to be held at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas at the end of August.

Westar Old Dog Rescue has been saving unwanted pets from euthanasia for over 20 years. Due to the recent passing of Elsie, the rescue is in desperate need of dog food, cat food, litter and volunteers to care for the animals left behind.

The winter reading program theme is "Read with Clifford, the Big Red Dog!"

No sign-up is necessary. Classes are available for all ages: Little Pups (age 2-3) Tuesdays, 9:15-9:45 a.m. (parent/guardian must accompany child); Red Pups (age 4-5) Tuesdays, 10-10:45 a.m.; Big Reds (5-12 and morning kindergarten) Tuesday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.; Craft Class (5th grade & up) Wednesdays 3:15-4:15 p.m.

Computer classes are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and include introduction to computers, beyond basics, Internet and email and genealogy. Times vary and sign-up must be in person at the library. No sign-ups by phone. Classes are free and space is limited.

PVHS T-shirts

The Pahrump Valley High School Renaissance class is trying to collect old PVHS T-shirts from anyone who is willing to donate. They are making a quilt to display at the school and in businesses throughout the valley to demonstrate how PVHS has changed.

The type of T-shirt doesn't matter as long as it is from PVHS. Clubs, sports, music, homecoming, and any others are appreciated.

All donations should be turned in to the A building office, the main office or Room B-28 by April 1.

Free vehicle tow away

Desert Towing is offering a free towing service to help Pahrump residents clean up their property.

Removal of unwanted or abandoned vehicles is free of charge.

Free tax aide service

IRS trained counselors will be offering their services at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B, Basin Road and Highway 160.

The goal is to provide free tax preparation and e-filing to young, low-income taxpayers and working seniors who may qualify for the earned income tax credit and may not be receiving it.

The volunteers will be available Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., during the tax season through April 20.

Host families sought

NSW PEACE Program, a non-profit and CSIET approved program is seeking families to host high school students from Brazil, Columbia, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany for the 2008 fall semester.

The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August to spend five to 10 months while attending the local high school.

Whether you are single, retired, have small children or no children, you can have a great experience hosting an international teen.

Students are pre-screened, speak English and look forward to learning about our culture while teaching us about theirs.

They have medical insurance and spending money to cover clothing, school supplies and entertainment.

Host families are not paid, but may be able to claim a $50 per month tax deduction for charitable contributions.

All the students require is a bed, meals and a caring family.

NWHA training clinic

The National Wild Horse Association will hold a training clinic at 10 a.m., March 15, at Windrock Ranch, 4779 W. Bell Vista Ave.

The clinic is to help horse owners train horses, not restrain them. The clinic includes demonstrations by their professional trainer, help with problem solving and interactive hands-on help.

Nye County Gold Seekers

The Nye County Gold Seekers, a nonprofit group promoting and preserving the history and activities of mining, will hold a monthly meeting, 1 p.m., March 16, at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B.

Caregiver training

Nathan Adelson Hospice will provide a two-day workshop to teach individuals to be caregivers in a home/hospice or health care/nursing home environment 9-5 p.m., March 17 and 18, in the training room at Desert View Medical Center, 360 S. Lola Lane.

The 16-hour training course is free and participants receive a certificate of attendance.
