AT STATE Trojans fall in 2 OT in semis
By DON McDERMOTT
RENO -- Truckee's girls, playing with a sense of urgency in the second half and two overtime periods, stunned Pahrump Valley 51-43 in the Nevada Class 3-A Girls Basketball State Tournament semifinals Friday. "It was a matter of us playing with confidence when we went out for the start of the second half," said Angelo Tenorio, the coach of the Wolverines. They had been held to just two points in the second quarter and trailed 19-12 at the break. Truckee drew even at 24-24 with 2:02 left in the third quarter; both teams alternated in the lead, with the score tied 38-38 at the end of regulation. The first overtime was much the same, with both teams struggling offensively. It was tied at 43-43 going into the second four-minute overtime. While Pahrump Valley went 0-for-8 from the field, including five point-blank attempts, Truckee was getting six points from freshman guard Megan Shalvis. Scoring mostly off 1-on-1 moves down the lane, Shalvis finished with 16 points. Katy Stephens, who scored two critical free throws early in the second overtime after an intentional foul was assessed the Trojans, finished with 10 points. Junior center Kristi Daffer, who had an outstanding post-season, scored 18 points, 14 rebounds and three assists against Truckee. The Trojans' backup posts, senior Christine Gamble, combined for 12 points and four rebounds as they were 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. "Playing Gamble and Scheller more or going with the players who got us here -- Daffer and Meads -- was something I had to consider," said Hopkins. Senior post Megan Meads had a game to forget, scoring just three points (11 below her season's average) and going 0-for-10 from the field. Meads had seven rebounds. PVHS guards were 4-for-22 from the field and had 17 turnovers, but more important, did not shoot a free throw, which is unique, considering Truckee guards pressured them throughout the game. Pahrump Valley committed 26 turnovers, including 11 steals by the Wolverines, who had 22 turnovers. The Trojans held a 38-25 edge in rebounding, but shot just 28 percent from the floor (15-for-54), while Truckee was 20-for-59 (34 percent). Pahrump Valley had 14 assists on its 15 field goals, while Truckee, relying on 1-on-1 moves off the perimeter or baseline throughout the game, had just seven assists. "We had a good year, but it was disappointing not playing for the championship," said Hopkins, whose last nine PVHS teams have won 198 and lost 45. That includes a remarkable 61-6 run in the 2004 and 2005 seasons when they won back-to-back state titles. "I remember last year, when Dominique (Maloy, a senior point guard) came up to me after we lost to Spring Creek in the state finals and told me 'We should have won this game.'" said Hopkins. There was no such comment Friday, but that could have been because the PV girls didn't play with the urgency and determination displayed by the Wolverines, who were only 13-14 going into the game. The Trojans, the Southern regional champions for the fifth time in six seasons, finished 25-8. Truckee lost 46-30 to Yerington in the state finals Saturday, with the Lions finishing 29-5.
