Lake Mead boys claim 1-A titlePVT
Lake Mead Christian Academy, after four consecutive title-game failures, finally prevailed in Nevada Class A boys' basketball state championship game Saturday. The Eagles, 33-1, defeated defending state champion and Southern Division rival Las Vegas Trinity 61-43 in the Lawlor Events Center. Stephen Byrd had 16 points and eight rebounds for Lake Mead, which had Jarid Dean add 13 points and Landon Littlefield 10. Coach Jeff Newton finally won his first state title in a season in which Lake Mead's only loss was to Boyd Anderson (Fla.) in a holiday tournament at Henderson in December. In other finals, it was: Owyhee 42, Las Vegas Mountain View Christian 38, girls 1-A ...Tina Gallardo fired in three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points for the defending state champion Braves ... Ellie Markwardt scored 20 points, including four treys, for the Saints. Lincoln County 78, Needles, Calif., 69, boys 2-A ... Dantley Walker, a freshman guard, scored 13 points, while eammates Kevin Hanning and Eric Rippletoe combined for 20 points in the fourth quarter, for the Lynx ... Darra Russell had 25 points for Needles. Needles, Calif., 63, Lincoln County 39, girls 2-A ... Too many turnovers proved costly to the Lincoln girls, who trailed 17-2 in the first quarter and were never in contention. ... Louise Solomon had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Needles, 27-3, which won its last 20 starts. Two of its three losses were to Pahrump Valley, in the River Valley, Ariz., Invitational in early December. |
