Hunter safety

The Nevada Department of Wildlife and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation are co-sponsoring a hunter safety course in Pahrump.

The course is mandatory for all first-time hunters.

The dates and times for the course in Pahrump:

March 17, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

March 18, 6 to 8.

March 19, 6 to 8.

March 20, 6 to 8.

March 21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To register for the course, go to the Web site (www.ndow.org) and complete the on-line work. Work books are also available (for a $5 fee) at WR Sporting LLC, 111 South Frontage Road, Suite 6, across from the Albertson's shopping center.

All work books must be completed before class begins. All classes must be attended to complete the course.

Stephens plays

Former Pahrump Valley High School multi-sports standout Matt Stephens is playing baseball at Harding University in Searcy, Ark.

Prep rodeo

Pahrump Valley will host a Nevada High School Rodeo Association event at McCullough Arena.

The dates are March 7-8-9, with cutting Friday, with Las Vegas. More than 150 high school rodeo participants are expected. Also involved will be the Wrangler Junior Rodeo team.

There will be 11 events in boys and girls competitions. The 4-H Club will operate the cook shack.

It is the sixth rodeo of the season for the NHSRA. On March 1-2, Las Vegas will host a rodeo, and on March 15-16, action will be at Fernley.

The state finals rodeo will be June 18-22 at Winnemucca.

20-gap tourney

The second annual Bob Connell Memorial 20-Gap Darts tournament will be held March 8 at the VFW, 4651 S. Manse Road, in Pahrump.

Two-person teams, with a 20-year gap in ages for partners, will compete in 501 and cricket, at a cost of $20 per team. It is a double-elimination tournament.

Prep football

The Sparks Sertoma Club announced that its 27th annual for-charity Football Classic will be played June 20 at Mackay Stadium, on the University of Nevada campus in Reno.

Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.

Two teams, the Silver and Blue and comprised of 50 players each, will compete; the athletes will be drawn from 33 Class A, 2-A and 3-A teams in Nevada, Lake Tahoe and Truckee, Calif.

Cody Neville of Yerington and Dan Avansino of Reno will be the head coaches. Rosters will be announced.

10-Star camp

Applications are being evaluated for the Ten-Star All-Star Summer Basketball camp. The camp is filled by invitation only.

Prescott, Ariz., and Thousand Oaks, Calif., are the closest camp sites in the southwestern United States. Other locales are Commerce, Texas; Babson Park, Fla.; Gainesville, Ga.; Champaign, Ill.; Glassboro, N.J.; Lebanon, Tenn. and Blacksburg, Va.

There is also a camp for boys and girls 6 to 18 years old.

Advantage Basketball is accepting registration for a basketball camp March 17-18-19-20 at the Tarkanian Academy in Las Vegas.
