Mean-spirited

Wednesday evening last week, my quiet, soft-spoken Philippino daughter-in-law was enjoying a few minutes at a local fast-food place with her 12-year-old son and several of his 12-year-old black friends.

They were just finishing up their fries and getting refills on their drinks when they were told to leave by management. I guess they didn't spend enough money?

How embarrassing for the mom. This is a first for her in the 19 years in the U.S.A. What a whopper of a welcome for new residents to Pahrump.

When my son called the corporate office to complain, he was told they have a strict no loitering policy for teenagers.

Come on, these kids were with a parent and doing nothing wrong. This just seems very mean-spirited and biased treatment to me.

My family and I will never set foot in this establishment again.

Handouts?

I have been following the stories about the students in the school system asking the Nye County Commissioners to finance various field trips.

Is there a policy in the district that prohibits the students from raising funds for their own trips?

I believe there are many lessons that can be learned when you have to work at getting your own financing for something you want.

Even a matching funds program from the commissioners would be preferable to just asking for a handout.

Form a bird registry

My husband and I are reading your paper online as we may be interested in moving there and we read Joanne Detweiler's letter about her bird that plucks its feathers.

This can be deadly.

We had the same problem with a cockatiel and just putting it in the same cage with a compatible bird of the opposite sex, and not even the same type, solved the problem. He is a happy little camper as we speak, and with all his feathers.

I do hope that Pahrump does get an avian vet. I find that other bird owners are pretty knowledgeable. Perhaps you might look into forming some sort of bird owners registry among yourselves.
