Basketball camp applications

Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only.

Boys and girls ages 10 to 19 are eligible to apply.

Players from 50 states and 10 foreign countries attended the 2007 camp.

College scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American Team.

Camp locations include Commerce, Texas; Prescott, Ariz.; Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Babson Park, Fla.; Gainesville, Ga.; Champaign, Ill.; Glassboro, N.J.; Lebanon, Tenn. and Blacksburg, Va.

There is also a summer camp for boys and girls ages 6 to 18 of all skill levels.

Trip to China

The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the National Hispanic Professional Organization is co-sponsoring a trip to China in March and will begin a second trip in November.

The nine-day trip departs Los Angeles International Airport.

Package includes airfare, accommodations in 4- and 5-star hotels, three meals per day, deluxe bus tours, English-speaking tour guides, admission to tourist attractions and airport taxis.

The cost is $1499 based on double occupancy.

There will be an orientation 9-11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Chamber of Commerce office. Anyone interested in going on the trip is encouraged to attend.

The Nye Goldseekers Club is going prospecting this weekend.

Free art classes

The Pahrump Arts Council will offer free art classes for young people as a bi-monthly program.

The February classes begin 11-2 p.m., Feb. 23, at the Pahrump Valley Museum on Basin Road.

Two classes will be held. Milo Reckow, a portrait artist and Carol McGovern, known for polymer clay art will teach.

All supplies are provided.

Model train meeting

Train enthusiasts of all ages will meet at 9 a.m., Feb. 23, at the United Methodist Church Social Hall, 1300 E. Hwy. 372.

The meeting is "show and tell." Bring your models, plans, trains or accessories to share, sell or trade.

Vendor workshop

The Town of Pahrump code enforcement division will hold an informational workshop for any vendors who want temporary sales licenses, at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 25, in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

A handful of different speakers will be on hand to provide information on licensing requirements including the Nevada Division of Health.

Singles club

The Pahrump Singles Friendship Club will meet at noon, Feb. 22, at the Winery.

Pump up Pahrump

The Nye Communities Coalition will hold the next fitness event, 10 a.m.-noon, Feb. 23, at Honeysuckle Park in the gazebo area.

Each school-age participant will be evaluated according to the President's Fitness Challenge levels for their age group.

There will be prizes, games and a good time for everyone.

The event is free and open to the public. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Kids drum night

Kids Drum Night is 7 p.m., Feb. 22, at Haven Selah, 1680 N. Blagg Road.

This for kids of all ages. Bring your drums, homemade is fine, and a snack to share with the group afterwards.

Feb. 22 -- NEIS Explore and Learn playgroup, 11 a.m.

Feb. 29 -- Car Seat Safety Class, 1-4 p.m., call for appointment.

Mondays -- Scrapbooking, 1-2 p.m., bring five pictures and supplies.

The Back to Basics Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old).

Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday.

Resource Lending Library is open from 9- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Lincoln Day dinner

The Pahrump Valley Republican Women are hosting a Lincoln Day dinner Feb. 29, at Mountain Falls Golf Club. Governor Jim Gibbons and First Lady Dawn Gibbons will be the guests of honor.

Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m.

Cost of participating is $60 per person, $110 per couple or $550 per reserved table. Tickets are available now.

Golden years luncheon

The Ms. Senior Golden Years USA will have a fashion show and luncheon Feb. 23, at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino to introduce the contestants to the board of directors and the queen's court.

There will be a raffle for the "Big Purple Basket," which contains a three-day stay on Lake Mead in a houseboat, a Valley Electric $50 power credit, wines and a picnic donated by Pahrump Valley Winery, stationary from B & C Printing, Phoenix car detail and wash, chocolates and more.

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. You do not have to be present to win.

Tickets may be purchased from Ms. Senior Golden Years Queens Court, the Chamber of Commerce and Saddle West registration desk.

The winning ticket will be drawn at the fashion show.

Youth art month

The Pahrump Community Library will be displaying artwork by local artist age 18 and younger.

If you would like your work displayed, bring it to the library after Feb. 25.

Work must be clearly labeled with artists name, age and title on the front and telephone number on the back or bottom.

All types of art are being accepted, including drawings, paintings, crayon, sculpture, etc.

Depending on the number of items received, displays may rotate.

Library staff will make every effort to secure the items, but cannot be held responsible for damage or theft.

Work may be picked-up after March 31, and works not claimed by April 15, will be discarded.

4-H open house

The Southern Nye County 4-H will hold an open house, 10-2 p.m., March 1, at the 4-H barn, corner of Calvada and Dandelion.

Exhibits for sheep, pigs, goats, chickens and rabbits, along with informational booths on clogging, cake decorating, Junior Master Gardening and quilting will be available. There will be demonstrations by the horse master, livestock and horsemanship clubs.

NWHA training clinic

The National Wild Horse Association is holding a training clinic at 10 a.m., March 15, at Windrock Ranch, 4779 W. Bell Vista Avenue.

The clinic is to help horse owners train horses, not restrain them. The clinic includes demonstrations by a professional trainer, help with problem solving and interactive hands-on help.

Come with or without a horse.

Space is limited and reservations are requested.

No dogs will be allowed.

The NWHA is a nonprofit organization, but they are asking for a suggested donation of $10 per person. Call 702-452-5853 to make reservations or get more information.

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library will meet at 9:15 a.m., March 1.

Keith Froehling will speak on his books, "Seizing Your Success" and "Living the Life You Love."

He will also discuss publishing your own book.

The PBR Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour has room for vendors at the show to be held May 3, at McCullough Arena.

EAA chapter meeting

The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 1160 will hold the next monthly meeting at 10 a.m., March 1, at Phil Shallenberger's hangar, corner of Helicopter Road and Jet Road in the Calvada Aeropark.

The program will feature a speaker from Nellis AFB, who will talk about avoiding midair collision in the airspace around Nellis.

Need home repairs?

Rebuilding Together with Pahrump, formerly Christmas in April, wants to help those with limited income needing home repairs.

Applications are available at the Chamber of Commerce, second floor of the Nevada State Bank Building.

Apply no later than March 8 to be considered.

Skilled/licensed trade/craft will be provided, as well as unskilled helping hands and all materials.

Women's self-defense class

The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes are presenting a women's self defense class, 8-4 p.m., Feb. 23 and 24, at the Pahrump courthouse on Basin Road.

The class is taught by law enforcement officers.

Learn what to watch for and how to be aware of your surroundings; what to do if an attacker surprises you; how to get away; what not to do and how to neutralize an attacker.

The class is free to any woman who wants to learn to defend herself. You must attend both classes.
