Nye County Sheriff's Office Dep. Paul Gellert, who worked in the Nye County Detention Center, was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident Thursday, Feb. 14, near Mountain Springs.

Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo said the deputy was in serious condition in a hospital in Las Vegas as of Tuesday afternoon.

The accident occurred when Gellert's vehicle collided with a slower-moving Nevada Department of Transportation sweeper truck on the mountain pass, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Honea.

Gellert was apparently just east of the fire station when the accident occurred, according to one of the many who were blocked by the wreckage Valentine's Day morning.

The sheriff said the deputy who had been with the office since 1999.

"I appreciate everyone's concern, and the sheriff's office is hoping and praying as well for the deputy's condition," DeMeo said.
