LAS VEGAS -- A football quarterback-playing-basketball guard powered Overton Moapa Valley to a 56-47 victory against Pahrump Valley Thursday, in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A regional tournament.

The Pirates got 25 points from Max Jenkins, including 10 in the final period, as Moapa Valley denied Pahrump Valley's goal of advancing to the state tournament for the second straight season.

The Trojans finished 17-14 in a season in which coach Lonnie Shereck was never really sure who would suit up for any given game, because of eligibility problems. And he was wondering which team would show up emotionally and psychologically on a particular night.

Thursday's game was prototypical for Pahrump Valley this season. The Trojans battled the Pirates practically dead-even for 24 minutes. It was tied 11-11 after one quarter, with the Pirates leading 22-20 and 31-30 at the next two breaks.

Then Jenkins, with penetrating moves into the paint, took charge. The 5-11 guard sparked a rally that gave the Pirates a 47-38 lead with a couple minutes left. Mike Amburgey drilled a couple long 3-pointers for the Trojans to close the gap to 47-44.

Down the stretch, however, the Pirates sank 9 of 10 free throws to extend their lead. The Pirates were 17-for-26 from the line; the Trojans were just 7-for-14.

Senior point guard Darius Dolly ended a spectacular season and career with the Trojans, scoring 18 points and keeping the defense hustling.

No one else was in double figures scoring. Shaun Johnson and Garry Tatum -- in his first and only game this season -- had nine points each.

In the regional finals, defending state champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran trounced Moapa Valley 66-43 to advance to the state semifinals. The Crusaders, 19-8, will play Incline at 12:40 p.m. Friday in the Lawlor Events Center on the University of Nevada campus in Reno.

In the other semifinal, Sparks will take on Dayton at 4 p.m. The championship showdown is at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Against Moapa Valley, Connor Maloney and Mike Amico scored 13 points each for the Crusaders, who led 13-11, 36-19 and 50-29 at the quarters. No Pirate scored in double figures in a game in which Faith Lutheran controlled the boards and the tempo throughout.
