Knights survive in 1-A playoffs

Both the Beatty and Tonopah high school girls' basketball teams were eliminated in the Southern Nevada Class A Regional tournament Tuesday. Wednesday, the Tonopah boys were ousted, leaving Round Mountain's girls as the only Nye County 1-A team still active in the post season.

Nye County's representation in the Nevada Class A basketball post-season playoffs is down to one team.

Tuesday, Round Mountain's girls, the No. 1 Central Division seed, defeated Las Vegas Calvary Chapel 55-31 to advance to today's Southern regional semifinals at Durango High School.

The Knights, coached by Delvin Jones, will play South No. 2 Pahranagat Valley Alamo at 6:20 p.m. In the other semifinal, Lund, the Central's No. 2 seed, will battle South No. 1 Las Vegas Mountain View Christian.

Alamo eliminated Beatty, the Central's No. 3 seed, 44-39, while Mountain View Christian ousted No. 4 Central Tonopah 43-32, as Randall VanKampen had 32 points and 10 rebounds for the Saints.

Today's winners collide at Del Sol High at noon Saturday to decide the regional championship, as well as the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds for the state semifinals, to be played Feb. 22 in Reno.

In boys' first-round games Wednesday, Tonopah, the Central No. 3 seed, lost 70-43 to defending state 1-A champion and South No. 2 seed Las Vegas Trinity Christian. It was the second consecutive year that the Thunder ousted the Muckers in the regionals.

Central teams did not fare well at all in the other two games Wednesday. No. 4 Henderson International School lost to South No. 1 Lake Mead Christian Academy 72-23 and No. 2 Spring Mountain fell to No. 3 Alamo 65-40.

Only Central No. 1 Lund escaped, with the Mustangs knocking South No. 4 Mountain View 87-73 Tuesday.

Lund will play Trinity at 8 p.m. today in the Durango regional semifinals. At 4:40 p.m., Lake Mead, now 28-1, will face Alamo.

The championship game is at 1:40 p.m. Saturday at Del Sol. Both teams advance to the state tournament Feb. 22-23.

Northern 1-A teams begin their regionals today at Winnemucca, with games in both the Events Center and at Lowry High School.

Class 2-A tournaments will be played today and Saturday at Del Sol.

In boys' games today, it's West Wendover vs. Needles, Calif., at 4:40 p.m. and Lincoln County vs. defending state champion Las Vegas The Meadows at 8 p.m. The finals are Saturday at 5 p.m.

In the girls' semifinals, Lincoln County takes on Ely White Pine at 3 p.m. and Needles, Calif., battles West Wendover at 6:20 p.m. The finals are at 3:20 p.m. Saturday.

In Class 4-A boys' games played through Wednesday, the winners were:

-- Henderson Liberty, Las Vegas Eldorado, Henderson Foothill and Canyon Springs in the Sunrise Region;

--Bishop Gorman, Durango, Cheyenne and Mojave in the Sunset Region.

The No. 1 team in the final Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School ratings, Bishop Gorman outlasted Cimarron-Memorial 75-64, while Durango outlasted Palo Verde 91-86 in overtime.

In the girls' 4-A tournament, advancing in the Sunrise Region at Green Valley were Green Valley, Basic, Silverado and Vo-Tech. In the Sunset tournament at Palo Verde, Bishop Gorman, Bonanza, Durango and Centennial, which crushed Sierra Vista 120-40 in the first round.

Bonanza upset Mojave 60-55 and Durango eliminated Palo Verde 66-47. Bishop Gorman, No. 1 in the final Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School basketball ratings, defeated Shadow Ridge 75-27.

Class 4-A tournament play continued Thursday and will conclude today, the Sunrise at Green Valley and the Sunset at Palo Verde.

The state 4-A tournament is Feb. 21-22 at the Lawlor Events Center on the University of Nevada campus in Reno.
