Prep rodeo

Pahrump Valley will host a two-day Nevada High School Rodeo Association event at McCullough Arena.

The dates are March 8-9, with cutting Feb. 29, with Las Vegas.

It is the sixth rodeo of the season for the NHSRA. On March 1-2, Las Vegas will host a rodeo, and on March 15-16, action will be at Fernley.

The state finals rodeo will be June 18-22 at Winnemucca.

WSOP finale

The Nugget Casino will host its final World Series of Poker No-Limit Hold'em qualifying tournament Saturday, starting at noon.

Thirty players are seeking five $2,000 seats for the 2008 WSOP, to be contest May 30-July 17 at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

College notes

Tyrell Smith, Dax Duesing and Alex Bietar, former Pahrump Valley High School baseball players, are at Feather River College for the spring 2008 season.

Smith, a lefthanded pitcher, threw six innings, allowing two runs and striking out five, in a 3-2 Feather River loss to Cosumnes River Friday.

The Golden Eagles are to play five games in four days this weekend in the San Francisco area.

Roller hockey

The Sharks defeated the Dragons 12-1 and the Ice Hawks edged the Stars 6-5 in Skate Zone kids' roller hockey league games.

Noah Jubinski and Austin Young scored four goals each for the 5-to-10 Division Sharks. Bradley Hamlin had the Dragons' goal.

James Pena had three goals in the 10-to-15 Division win by the Ice Hawks. Shannon Schmidt and Michael Aviles had two goals each for the Stars.

Camp in March

Advantage Basketball is accepting registration for a basketball camp March 17-18-19-20 at the Tarkanian Academy in Las Vegas.

Leagues merge

The Pahrump Little League and the Pahrump Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Association have agreed to merge their programs for the 2008 season.

According to Charlotte Uyeno of the Little League program, all players who have already registered with the softball association will be transferred to the new Little League-sanctioned softball organization, at no additional cost.

Any new girls' fast-pitch softball players are welcome to register, said Uyeno. An additional tryout session will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Honeysuckle Park.

The goal of the now-reorganized group is to hold clinics and seminars for Pahrump-area youngsters.

The PLL is still taking baseball players 5 to 8 years old for T-Ball and Minor Machine Pitch leagues, and for players 13-16 for Junior and Senior leagues. A registration period for baseball players is scheduled Wednesday.
