Vision impaired meeting The Pahrump Valley chapter of Vision Impaired Persons will hold a monthly meeting at 1 p.m., Feb. 19, at the Pahrump Senior Center, 1370 W. Basin Road. All interested persons are invited. The group provides support and information for individuals who have difficulty seeing or are suffering from degenerative vision loss. Learn how a legally blind person can adapt and lead a normal lifestyle. Information is available on personal property tax relief, free phone directory assistance, veterans assistance for individuals who have served and possible additional VA compensation for vision loss connected to military service. AGLOW AGLOW is an interdenominational international Christian women's organization providing an opportunity for Christian women to grow in faith and minister to others. Mammovan The Nevada Health Centers Mammovan will be offering mammograms in Pahrump Feb. 19 through Feb. 22 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Appointments will commence at 10 a.m., Feb. 19 and they will end at 1:45 p.m., Feb. 22. The regular hours will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch break from noon to 12:45 p.m. For more information, call 877-581-6266. SNAPS SNAPS needs donations of pet food for our Food Share Program. Craft supplies needed A group of volunteers in Pahrump are making items for our senior shut-ins and our soldiers in Iraq. We need unused and unwanted craft supplies and yarn. Volunteers will make the supplies into useful items. The group will be making assorted Christmas tree ornaments and stockings to be filled. For our soldiers, there is a national group that fills and ships the stockings. Black yarn is needed for helmet liners for our troops. Other yarns are needed for scarves and slippers. Socks of any color can be used for our senior shut-ins and those in the local nursing home. Two hundred stockings will be made to fill for Pahrump residents for Christmas 2008. Host families sought NSW PEACE Program, a non-profit and CSIET approved program is seeking families to host high school students from Brazil, Columbia, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany for the 2008 fall semester. The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August to spend five to 10 months while attending the local high school. Whether you are single, retired, have small children or no children, you can have a great experience hosting an international teen. Students are pre-screened, speak English and look forward to learning about our culture while teaching us about theirs. They have medical insurance and spending money to cover clothing, school supplies and entertainment. Host families are not paid, but may be able to claim a $50 per month tax deduction for charitable contributions. All the students require is a bed, meals and a caring family. Freecycle to recycle The Internet group, www.groups.yahoo.com/pahrumpfreecycle is part of a national organization of message boards where members offer those things that might be used by someone else rather than throw them away. Women Entrepreneurs A support/networking group for women who either own a business in Pahrump, or are interested in starting their own business will provide support from other entrepreneurs, information to help start/grow a business, classes, speakers, networking and a chance to socialize with like minded women. Power wheelchairs The Senior Wheels USA program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify. Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. If the patient's need is for use in the home, call 1-800-246-6010. VA van A van is available to veterans needing transportation to the Veterans Administration Clinic in Pahrump. High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists The High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists Society for adults meets every Tuesday from 11-2 p.m. at Seemoore's Too on Highway 160. Wal-Mart Wall of Heros If you have a picture of someone who has served or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the south wall, bring an 8 x 10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk. This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. Model aviators meeting The Pahrump Model Aviators Club holds a monthly meeting at 9 a.m., the second Saturday of the month at Desert View Regional Medical Center, lower level across from the cafeteria. Anyone interested in learning about R/C model airplanes is invited to attend. They are members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, a national organization of 2,500 clubs and 170,000 members. Melanoma Fighters Club "Mandy's Melanoma Fighters Club" seeks two to three preteen and teenagers from each middle and high school in Pahrump to promote melanoma and skin cancer awareness in their school. Quilts charity fund drive Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501(c)(3) charity, is looking for people to share their sewing talent and basic quilting to make quilts for adults with cancer. As supply costs skyrocket for shipping and handling, the charity is in great need of batting and backing. In Nye County, many residents are being treated for cancer. If you want to donate a quilt, it should be at least 50 x 50 or larger, any pattern and color and should fit most home washers and dryers. Call 727-9994 for more information. Free tax aide service IRS trained counselors will be offering their services at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B, Basin Road and Highway 160. The goal is to provide free tax preparation and e-filing to young, low-income taxpayers and working seniors who may qualify for the earned income tax credit and may not be receiving it. The volunteers will be available Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., during the tax season through April 20. Appointments are necessary. Art and Sol 2008 All fine artists and crafters should get ready for the 14th annual Art & Sol display for Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25 at the Pahrump Nugget Event Center. Space is limited. Angels Have Wheels All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. For information on Medicare eligibility contact Gregory at 1-800-810-2877. Retired/senior program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers 24 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. VHRU maintains a Web site that describes the mission and provides information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The Web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization. Due to the recent passing of Elsie, the rescue is in desperate need of dog food, cat food, litter and volunteers to care for the animals left behind. Fish fry Our Lady of the Valley fish fry will be 4-7 p.m., Feb. 15 at the hall, 781 E. Gamebird Road. Dinner choices are fried, baked or tacos, refreshments included. Horse club horse show The Pahrump Valley Rough Riders are having the first Gymkhana Horse Show beginning 9 a.m., Feb. 16 at McCullough Arena. Sign-up is 7-8 a.m. and all ages and skill levels are welcome. There is a $50 membership fee and each show is an additional $20 per show fee. Fees include ribbons, end-of-year buckle and prizes. Women's self-defense class The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes are presenting a women's self defense class, 8-4 p.m., Feb. 23 and 24, at the VFW Hall, 4651 Homestead Road. The class is taught by law enforcement officers. Learn what to watch for and how to be aware of your surroundings; what to do if an attacker surprises you; how to get away; what not to do; and how to neutralize an attacker.
