Winnemucca hosts 1-A North; Virginia City teams rank first

Defending Nevada Class A girls' basketball champion Owyhee will play Coleville, Calif., Thursday night in Winnemucca, which will host the three-day Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned playoffs.

In other girls' matchups Thursday, it will be Wells vs. either Smith Valley or Gerlach (which met in a play-in game Tuesday); Eureka vs. Pyramid Lake, and McDermitt vs. Virginia City.

Wells is the East Division No. 1 seed; Virginia City is No. 1 in the West.

The semifinals are Friday at Lowry High School, with the finals at noon Saturday in the Events Center.

In the boys' regionals, it will be Owyhee vs. Coleville, Wells vs. Smith Valley, Carlin vs. Pyramid Lake and Eureka vs. Virginia City.

Owyhee is the East's No. 1 seed, while Virginia City, a 19-time state boys' champion, led the West.

The semifinals are at 4:40 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday at Lowry. The title clash is at 1:40 p.m. Saturday in the Events Center.

The state tournament is Feb. 22-23 in Reno. The top two girls and boys teams advance to the state semifinals.
