Mucker, Hornets ousted; Round Mountain in winThe Tonopah and Beatty High School girls' basketball teams, after fightiing all season to qualify for the Southern Nevada Class A playoffs, had their campaings end Wednesday night, on the road. However, Round Mountain, the third Nye County 1-A team to advance to the post-season, trounced visiting Las Vegas Calvary Chapel 55-31 to move into Friday's semifinals at Durango High School in Las Vegas. The Knights will play at 6:20 p.m. against Pahranagat Valley Alamo. Tonopah's No. 4-seeded Muckers, coached by Eddie Cobb, fell 43-32 at No. 1 Las Vegas Mountain View Christian, as the winner's Randall VanKampen scored 32 points to go with 10 rebounds and four steals. No. 3 Beatty lost 44-39 to No. 2 Alamo and in the fourth quarter-final contest, Lund edged Lake Mead Christian Academy 39-38. Coached by Aimee Senior, Beatty lost 52-51 in overtime to Tonopah Friday, but came back Saturday to edge Lund 49-45 to claim the No. 3 seed over Tonopah, 5-5 in the division. Round Mountain, 10-0 in the division, got the No. 1 seed . Lund was the No. 2 Central seed. The semifinals are Friday at Durango High School in Las Vegas, with the championship matchups Saturday at Del Sol High. The state 1-A tournament is Feb. 22-23 at Reno. Beatty's boys did not qualify for the playoffs, finishing 4-8 in division games, including two tough losses last weekend. Coach Brian Hayes' Hornets lost 33-32 at Tonopah Friday and 42-39 against Lund Saturday. "We lost five league games by a total of 18 points and two went into overtime, both of which we lost," said Hayes. "If we win all of those games, we're 9-3 in the division and a possible No. 2 seed." Joe Serrano had 18 points, while Jacob Sumpter had six points and 13 rebounds at Tonopah. "We missed six layups and seven free throws ... that sums it up ," said Hayes. Against the Central champion Mustangs, the Hornets were outscored 21-9 in the fourth quarter. "We dominated defensively the first three quarters," said Hayes. "And we took care of the basketball ... but we turned it over 12 times in the fourth quarter." Junior Dare had 12 points and nine rebounds, with Jose Mendoza adding nine points and five steals for Beatty, which led 10-4, 21-13 and 30-21 at the quarters. The boys' 1-A playoffs began Tuesday with No. 1 Central Lund hosting No. 4 South Las Vegas Mountain View. Tonight, it will be No. 3 Central Tonopah going to defending state 1-A champion and No. 2 South Las Vegas Trinity; No. 4 Central Henderson International School at No. 1 South Lake Mead Christian Academy, and No. 3 South Alamo at No. 2 Central Spring Mountain. Lake Mead is 27-1 this season and went 10-0 against division opponents. The semifinals are Friday at Durango, with games at 4:40 p.m. and 8 p.m. The title showdown is at 1:40 p.m. Saturday at Del Sol. |
