SPECIAL TO THE PVT

Pahrump Valley's girls went on an 18-0 run to start the second half and coasted to a 51-36 home win over Overton Moapa Valley Friday night.

Thursday at 6:20 p.m. in the Del Sol High School gym in east-central Las Vegas, the No. 1 seeded Trojans and No. 4 Pirates get to do it all over again, this time in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A regional basketball tournament.

The boys from Pahrump Valley and Moapa Valley collide for the second time in less than a week as well. The No. 3 Trojans, who lost 67-49 Friday, and the No. 2 Pirates will clash at 4:40 p.m. Moapa Valley was out to avenge a 59-58 overtime loss at Overton last month, and succeeded by playing an attack offense and stingy defense.

The tournament finals are Saturday at Del Sol, with only the champion boys' and girls' teams to advance to the state tournament Feb. 22-23 at Reno's Lawlor Events Center.

In the other girls semifinal, No. 2 Mesquite Virgin Valley will battle No. 3 Las Vegas Faith Lutheran at 3 p.m. At 8:20, the No. 1 Faith Lutheran boys, Nevada's defending state champions, will take on No. 4 Virgin Valley.

Neither Boulder City team qualified for the playoffs.

The Lady Trojans spent much of the first half trading leads with the Pirates, while Pahrump Valley coach Bob Hopkins paced the sidelines with a scowl.

However, after leading 21-19 at halftime, the Trojans smothered the Pirates in the third quarter and soon led 39-19. They did their damage with an aggressive full court press, pushed the tempo on offense and pounded the ball inside to one of their many skilled, 5-foot-10-or-taller post players.

In fact, the first play of the second half was an entry pass to 6-foot junior Kristi Daffer, who was fouled on the shot and sank both free throws to begin the 18-zip run.

It was senior night in Pahrump, and Hopkins chose to start five seniors, which may have disrupted the team's rhythm early.

"That shouldn't make that much difference, but the kids didn't play real hard," he said. He added with a chuckle, "At halftime, we had a little talk."

Moapa's Shelby Thompson knocked down a three to finally end the run, and the Pirates played even with Pahrump the rest of the way.

That is something to build on, according to Pirate head coach Jordan Adams. Particularly in the first half, Moapa was able to frustrate the Trojans at times with their own full-court pressure.

"We're capable of playing with everyone," said Adams. "I think we just have a bunch of girls that don't have any confidence and I've been trying to find a way to get them confidence."

Adams hopes Moapa can learn not to buckle under defensive pressure.

"(Pahrump) came out tougher in the second half, obviously," she said. "But I thought we could've came out and tried to at least match it."

Thompson led Moapa with six points.

Senior guard Brittney Lindgren led the Trojans with 13 points. Daffer finished with 12.

Heading to the regional tournament, starting Thursday, Pahrump Valley looks primed for a title run. This is in large part thanks to the inside presence of Daffer, seniors Christine Gamble, Stephanie Taylor and Megan Meads, along with freshman Casey Scheller.
