It's the wild, wild North 3-APVT
What's up with those Northern Nevada Class 3-A League basketball teams? Consider: Four teams -- Dayton, Incline, Yerington and Sparks -- are in the chase for the boys' regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. Four teams -- Dayton, Yerington, Spring Creek and Winnemucca Lowry -- are separated by just one game, and Truckee (Calif.) is only two back in fifth place in the girls' standings. Wednesday in boys' games, Dayton (9-3) moved into sole possession of first place with a 43-34 conquest of Yerington (8-4); Truckee (6-6) upset Incline 71-62, dropping the Highlanders to 8-4; Sparks (8-4) humbled Fernley 64-39 and Lowry (6-6) dropped Spring Creek to 1-12 with a 54-42 win. In the girls' division, Yerington defeated Dayton 43-39 to create a tie for first place. Both the Lions and Dust Devils are 9-3 in the league. Elsewhere, Spring Creek (8-4) lost 56-49 to Lowry (8-4); Fernley (4-8) stopped Sparks 43-35, and Truckee (7-5) defeated Incline 33-26. Tonight in girls-boys doubleheaders, it's Fernley at Dayton, Spring Creek at Truckee, Lowry at Incline and Yerington at Sparks. Saturday, the regular season ends with Lowry at Truckee, Sparks at Dayton, Spring Creek at Incline and Fernley at Yerington. The top six finishers in both the boys and girls divisions qualify for the playoffs, to be contested Feb. 14-15-16 at Elko High. The Nos. 1 and 2 seeds draw first-round byes, with the other matchups No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5. Three girls and boys teams will advance to the state tournament Feb. 22-23 at the Lawlor Events Center on the University of Nevada campus in Reno. Completing the semifinal brackets will be the Southern champions. The Southern regionals are Feb. 14 and 16 at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas. |
