DAR monthly meeting The Pahrump Springs chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold the regular monthly meeting at 10 a.m., Feb. 13, in the Pahrump Community Library meeting room. PVHS Key Club dance The PVHS Key Club is holding a super dance for high school students only, 7-11 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Tickets are $8 per person or $10 per couple. Dress to impress. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. They are also accepting donations for the American Cancer Society and those may be dropped off the evening of the dance. Emery, is as follows: Feb. 8 -- NEIS Explore and Learn playgroup, 11 a.m. Feb. 18 -- closed for Presidents day. Feb. 19 -- Teen Parenting, 2-4 p.m. Feb. 21 -- Family Vehicle Safety Class, 4 p.m., call for registration. There is a fee. Feb. 22 -- NEIS Explore and Learn playgroup, 11 a.m. Feb. 25 -- Family Vehicle Safety Class, Se habla Espanol, call for registration. There is a fee. Feb. 29 -- Car Seat Safety Class, 1-4 p.m., call for appointment. Mondays (except Feb. 18) Scrapbooking, 1-2 p.m., bring five pictures and supplies. The Back to Basics Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday. Resource Lending Library is open from 9- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For car seat safety checks or assistance with Nevada Check-up applications, please call for an appointment. Call 751-5898 (se habla español) for more information. Garden Club The Pahrump Valley Garden Club will meet at 9 a.m., Feb. 9 in the UNVR Extension Office, corner of Dandelion and Calvada. Ms. Senior Nye County Pageant The Ms. Senior Nye County Pageant for 2008 will be held April 4-5, Saddle West Hotel and Casino. Any ladies at the elegant age of 60 plus may enter. Everyone has a talent and dancers, singers, comediennes or any other stage performances are welcome. The winner of the pageant will continue to the Ms. Senior Nevada State Pageant to be held at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas at the end of August. Sierra Club meeting The desert committee of the Sierra Club and the wilderness committees for both California and Nevada will hold a joint meeting at noon on Saturday, Feb. 9, and 8 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Flower Building in Shoshone, Calif. A potluck will follow the Saturday meeting at approximately 6 p.m., and a hike from China Ranch to see the Amargosa River Valley will follow the Sunday meeting. The groups will be discussing a full range of desert conservation issues and the meetings are open to the public. Sierra Club membership is not necessary. Horse club horse show The Pahrump Valley Rough Riders are having the first Gymkhana Horse Show beginning 9 a.m., Feb. 16 at McCullough Arena. Sign-up is 7-8 a.m. and all ages and skill levels are welcome. There is a $50 membership fee and each show is and additional $20 per show fee. Fees include ribbons, end-of-year buckle and prizes. Need volunteers and donations Westar Old Dog Rescue has been saving unwanted pets from euthanasia for over 20 years. Due to the recent passing of Elsie, the rescue is in desperate need of dog food, cat food, litter and volunteers to care for the animals left behind. Food can be dropped at Westar Old Dog Rescue on Manse Road or left for pick-up at D...is for Dog. To volunteer your time, call Denise at 751-8513. Monetary donations are also welcome. Poetry jam The next meeting is scheduled 10 a.m.-noon, Feb. 9 at the deli, just off Highway 160 at Basin Road, across from Petrack Park. Readings from the great poets alternate with open mike. Vision impaired meeting The Pahrump Valley chapter of Vision Impaired Persons will hold a monthly meeting at 1 p.m., Feb. 19, at the Pahrump Senior Center, 1370 W. Basin Road. All interested persons are invited. The group provides support and information for individuals who have difficulty seeing or are suffering from degenerative vision loss. Learn how a legally blind person can adapt and lead a normal lifestyle. Information is available on personal property tax relief, free phone directory assistance, veterans assistance for individuals who have served and possible additional VA compensation for vision loss connected to military service. Call 751-5730 for more information. Hawaii meeting The next Hawaii Club meeting will be noon, Feb. 16. This will be a potluck luncheon. Teen night The Nye Communities Coalition in partnerships with St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church s hosting a teen night, 6-9 p.m., Feb. 22, Seemores' Too! Women's self-defense class The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes are presenting a women's self defense class, 8-4 p.m., Feb. 23 and 24, at the VFW Hall, 4651 Homestead Road. The class in taught by law enforcement officers. Learn what to watch for and how to be aware of your surroundings; what to do if an attacker surprises you; how to get away; what not to do; and how to neutralize an attacker. The class is free to any woman who wants to learn to defend herself. You must attend both classes. Call Denise, 513-8636, for more information. Fish fry Our Lady of the Valley fish fry will be 4-7 p.m., Feb. 8 at the hall, 781 E. Gamebird Road. Dinner choices are fried, baked or tacos, refreshments included. Dessert and drinks are available.
