Fiber Arts Show at Bob RuudPVT
The Pahrump Arts Council and Shadow Mountain Quilters will present the 12th annual Fiber Arts Show Feb. 22 - 24 at the Bob Ruud Community Center, corner of Highway 160 and Basin Avenue. The show features an exhibit of colorful quilts adorning the walls of the center and displays of a variety of needlework, such as embroidery, knitting, counted cross-stitch, wearable art, and crochet. About 90 items have been entered in the judged competitions for cash prizes and ribbons in a range of categories, including Best of Show. The People's Choice award offers attendees the opportunity to vote for their personal favorite item in the show. Vendor booths will offer a selection of hand-crafted articles, including historic and period doll clothing, hand-painted silk scarves, direct to fabric image transfers and quilting supplies. The friendship quilt is a popular annual feature at the show which invites audience participation. Experienced quilters stretch an unfinished quilt on an antique frame in the manner of an old-fashioned quilting bee and allow everyone to take some stitches under their guidance. A drawing for the opportunity quilt made by the Shadow Mountain Quilters will be held on Sunday. Tickets will be available at the show for the queen-size quilt in earth tones of cream, red, and green. All proceeds go to the PAC building fund, where the major project focus centers around the cultural arts center to hopefully be located in the Calvada eye. Drawings for door prizes will be held hourly and other donated prizes will be raffled. "New this year is the bed-turning," said Melinda Gorley, event co-chairman. "Quilts will be layered on a bed on the stage. Some will be antique, others new, but all have a story to tell." During the show, volunteers will hold the quilts up for display and tell their stories to the audience. The quilt block challenge presents a new contest every year for quilters. This year, the entrants must make a quilt block with a theme or in colors that use the initials of their first and last names. The Quilted Dragon will award $50 gift certificates to the winners in each category as well as "viewer's choice" as voted by attendees. A "Mini-Treasures" silent auction will benefit the Shadow Mountain Quilters. Quilters have donated small or miniature quilts or hand-crafted items that will be displayed for bidding. Craft demonstrations begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, and continue hourly through Sunday afternoon. The demonstrations include quilting, embroidery, tatting, spinning, and something that might come in handy, "how to make a duct tape wallet." The Arts Café opens on Saturday and Sunday and features sandwiches and treats from Lois Layne's Deli. The Fiber Arts Show hours are 1-6 p.m. Friday, 9-5:00 p.m. Saturday, and 10-4 p.m. on Sunday. Awards presentations and the drawing for the opportunity quilt are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. The show is free and open to the public, with donations accepted at the door.
