County grants funds to fix road bend

A bend in the road in front of the Concordia Homes of Southern Nevada project on Homestead Road will be straightened out soon.

Nye County Commissioners gave the Nye County Public Works Department $95,500 to widen Homestead Road 1,450 feet. The project is being funded with the impact fees paid by developers for street improvements.

Work began on the Concordia Homes Pleasant Valley subdivision in fall 2007; about 50 homes were eventually built before the slowdown in the real estate industry impacted Pahrump.

Homestead Road was reconstructed with two travel lanes and one right turn lane in front of the entrance to the new development, which required a slight detour.

Commissioners previously discussed complaints from motorists about the realignment. The road will be straightened out with an additional lane. Public works prepared preliminary plans and a budget estimate.

The county didn't plan to improve that part of Homestead Road until fiscal year 2014, based on the Pahrump Streets and Highways Capital Improvement Plan, a report from Nye County Public Works Director Samson Yao states.

Homestead Road is increasingly being eyed by developers for commercial projects.

During the same meeting as the budget appropriation, county commissioners voted to accept an offer from Cavallo Development, dedicating 20 feet of right-of-way on the east frontage at 2780 S. Homestead Road, a few blocks south of Highway 160, as part of the site development plan for a two story commercial office project.

Maninder-Herr donated 20 feet of right-of-way on the eastern frontage at 2980 East Banyon St. at Homestead Road, for a site development plan showing an animal hospital.
