USDA seminar

The USDA Rural Development will hold a monthly meeting at 10 a.m., Feb. 6, at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Sierra Club meeting

The desert committee of the Sierra Club and the wilderness committee for both California and Nevada will hold a joint meeting at noon on Saturday, Feb. 9, and 8 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Flower Building in Shoshone, Calif.

A potluck will follow the Saturday meeting at approximately 6 p.m., and a hike from China Ranch to see the Amargosa River Valley will follow the Sunday meeting.

The groups will be discussing a full range of desert conservation issues and the meetings are open to the public. Sierra Club membership is not necessary.

Free vehicle tow away

Desert Towing is offering a free towing service to help Pahrump residents clean up their property.

Women's self-defense class

The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes are presenting a women's self defense class, 8-4 p.m., Feb. 23 and 24, at the VFW Hall, 4651 Homestead Road.

The class in taught by law enforcement officers.

Learn what to watch for and how to be aware of your surroundings; what to do if an attacker surprises you; how to get away; what not to do; and how to neutralize an attacker.

The class is free to any woman who wants to learn to defend herself. You must attend both classes.

The February class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Feb. 8 -- NEIS Explore and Learn playgroup, 11 a.m.

Feb. 18 -- closed for Presidents day.

Feb. 19 -- Teen Parenting, 2-4 p.m.

Feb. 21 -- Family Vehicle Safety Class, 4 p.m., call for registration. There is a fee.

Feb. 22 -- NEIS Explore and Learn playgroup, 11 a.m.

Feb. 25 -- Family Vehicle Safety Class, Se habla Espanol, call for registration. There is a fee.

Feb. 29 -- Car Seat Safety Class, 1-4 p.m., call for appointment.

The Back to Basics Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old).

Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday.

Resource Lending Library is open from 9- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fish fry

Our Lady of the Valley fish fry will be 4-7 p.m., Feb. 8 at the hall, 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Republican meeting

The Nye County Republican Central Committee will be having the first quarterly meeting, 1 p.m., Feb. 9 at the Library.

The county convention will be held 8-4 p.m., March 8, in Beatty at the Senior Center.

Model aviators meeting

The Pahrump Model Aviators Club holds a monthly meeting at 9 a.m., the second Saturday of the month at Desert View Regional Medical Center, lower level across from the cafeteria.

Anyone interested in learning about R/C model airplanes is invited to attend.

They are members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, a national organization of 2,500 clubs and 170,000 members.

Library calendar

The Pahrump Community Library is located at 701 East Street, and is hosting the following events in February:

Computer classes are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and include introduction to computers, beyond basics, Internet and email and genealogy. Times vary and sign-up must be in person at the library. No sign-ups by phone. Classes are free and space is limited.

The Pahrump Community Library offers home bound delivery service for anyone who is unable to visit the library.

Free tax aide service

IRS trained counselors will be offering their services at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B, Basin Road and Highway 160.

The goal is to provide free tax preparation and e-filing to young, low-income taxpayers and working seniors who may qualify for the earned income tax credit and may not be receiving it.

The volunteers will be available Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., during the tax season through April 20.

Appointments are necessary.

VEA Scholarship program

Valley Electric Association will award six educational scholarships to assist qualified individuals in furthering their education.

Two full-time vocational/technical scholarships and two part-time continuing education scholarships will be awarded.
