Recycled books bring in $5,800PVT The Friends of the Pahrump Community Library gave a round of applause at their January meeting as President Ed Sepulveda announced the total income for 2007. Thanks to the generosity of the public willing to donate their used books, and bargain-wise patrons browsing the shelves of the Friends Book Store, a total of $5,800 was realized in sales of recycled books. In support of the community library, the Friends have used past earnings to purchase books, reference-related materials and display units. They have also contributed to the purchase of copiers, computers, and software. The outdoor benches in the entrance corridor were donated and installed by the Friends. This year's earnings, at the request of the library staff, were spent on three major items: a large globe mounted on a stand, a newspaper rack to facilitate patron use, and several book-trucks to assist in shelf organization. The Friends of the Library is a group of local volunteers dedicated to the improvement of literacy through the Pahrump Community Library. Their chief activity is raising funds to augment the collections and services of the library. Most of the money raised is from the sale of donated books. These recycled books are sold both on a daily basis in the Friend's Bookstore, located in the library, and at occasional special book sales. The Friends of the Library meet on the first Saturday of each month, in the library meeting room. Following a brief business meeting, a visiting speaker, usually a local author, is introduced. In past months, attendants have enjoyed exceptional speakers, including several local authors who have published through Stephens Press, and long-time Pahrump residents who have shared their experiences growing up in Pahrump. The public is encouraged to attend. Watch for meeting notices in the Pahrump Valley Times. If you have books to donate, call VP Ed Underhill, 727-9823. |
