IN SOUTHERN 3-A WRESTLING SATURDAY Trojans' biggest threat: Bulldogs
By DON McDERMOTT
Pahrump Valley goes after its fourth consecutive Southern Nevada Class 3-A regional wrestling championship Saturday -- at home. Which is fitting, considering that this is the final wrestling campaign for Pahrump Valley in Class 3-A. In the 2008-2009 school year, Pahrump Valley moves into the 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division. Competition starts at 10 a.m. in the Trojans' gym, with long-time power Mesquite Virgin Valley the major threat to coach Craig Rieger's squad that Wednesday completed an unbeaten league dual meet season. The Trojans defeated Overton Moapa Valley 77-6 and Las Vegas Faith Lutheran 83-0 to boost their record to 8-0 in the league, 29-3 in all duals. Virgin Valley was 6-2, with Boulder City 4-4, Moapa Valley 2-6 and Faith Lutheran 0-8. Moapa Valley edged the Crusaders 39-30 in the other dual contested at PVHS Wednesday. Weigh-ins are at 8 a.m. and the gym will open to the public at 9 a.m. The top three in each of the 14 weight classes advance to the state tournament, to be held Feb. 9 at Moapa Valley. The first five finishers in the Northern meet complete the eight-man brackets at state. Pahrump Valley's probable starting lineup Saturday: 103 pounds -- Freshman Elliott Owens, 30-10. 112 -- Senior Elias Armendariz, 44-4. 119 -- Junior Josh Armendariz, 22-17. 125 -- Junior Paul Miller, 14-14. 130 -- Junior Chris DeMille, 32-14. 135 -- Junior Gueran Fenicle. 140 -- Senior Kyle Abreu-Buendia. 145 -- Senior James Chapman, 42-6. 152 -- Junior Steven Schmidt. 160 -- Junior Ande Floyd. 171 -- Junior Zach Weldon, 47-2. 189 -- Junior Joe Colucci, 31-15. 215 -- Senior Pierce Henkel, 39-8. 285 -- Senior Frank Lopez, 45-3. Everybody was 2-0 Wednesday, except Fenicle, as the Trojans completed another unbeaten league dual-meet campaign. Elias Armendariz and Chapman won state championships at Sparks SpanishSprings in 2007. The weight-class title threats Saturday? Cody Cannon, Virgin Valley, 103 pounds; Brandt Eaton, Virgin Valley, 112; Aaron Rappleye, Virgin Valley, 119; Stetson Ruth, Virgin Valley, 125, or Brian McKeever, Boulder City, 125; Al Haines, Boulder City, 130 (he is a former Pahrump Valley Powerhouse wrestler); Parley Leavitt, Virgin Valley, 135; Tom Tormasgard, Boulder City, 152, or Brady Eaton, Virgin Valley, 152 or 160; Sawyer Goff, Virgin Valley, 152 or 160; John Ruiz Jr., Faith Lutheran, 171, or Wyatt Robison, 171, Virgin Valley; Mike Staley, Moapa Valley, 189; D'Andre Mathews, Virgin Valley, 215 and Brent Horlacher, Moapa Valley, 285. "We're ready," said Rieger, after completing the sweep of league rivals in dual meets. "We have two practices left; all we have to worry about now is making weight, staying healthy, and eligibility." Those are standard concerns preceding any major wrestling tournament. |
