Pahrump Valley's boys' basketball team claimed its 15th victory of the season in gutsy style Tuesday.

Trailing defending Nevada Class A champion Las Vegas Trinity Christian 27-14 at halftime, the homestanding Trojans outscored the Thunder 42-26 after the break to grab a 56-53 victory.

With three Southern Nevada Class 3-A League games remaining, the Trojans, 15-12, can finish at .500 or better for the second time in three seasons, under the direction of coach Lonnie Shereck. The Trojans, who did not have a winning record since the 2001-2002 campaign, were 16-9 two years ago and 12-15 last season. PVHS finished 13-17, after going 1-2 in post-season games.

The Trojans, 2-3 in the league, are at home tonight at 7:30 against Mesquite Virgin Valley; the Bulldogs defeated PVHS 60-43 in Mesquite a couple weeks ago and are 2-4 in the 3-A.

Pahrump Valley goes to Boulder City Tuesday and is at home against Overton Moapa Valley Feb. 8 to complete the regular season.

The objective for the Trojans is simple: win out and clinch one of the top three seeds for the regionals, to be played Feb. 14 and 16 at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, the defending league, regional and state champion, claimed the No. 1 seed with a 74-41 conquest of Virgin Valley Tuesday. The Crusaders are 6-0 in the league, 18-7 in all games.

Point guard Darius Dolly scored 20 points, 11 in the second half and Mike Amburgey bombed in a key 3-pointer in the Trojans' fourth-quarter surge against Trinity.

Amburgey's shot from the right wing gave Pahrump Valley a 51-47 lead with less than three minutes left; he finished with eight points.

Tyler True had 12 points, seven in the third quarter when the Trojans went on a 25-14 run to close the gap to 41-39 going into the final eight minutes.

Marvin Weekly scored all of his eight points in the second half, including going 2-for-2 from the line in the final period. That was in stark contrast to the Thunder; it was just 2-for-11 in the final period, including missing seven straight.

Budwiser Hawkins had 15 points, Jordan Ellerbe 11 and Daveron Ross 10 for the Greg Harton-coached Class A Southern Division team, now 14-8 with its next start tonight against Pahranagat Valley Alamo.
