PREP BASKETBALL Other than Faith boys, playoff scene jumbled
By DON McDERMOTT
Pahrump Valley's girls have clinched a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League basketball playoff berth. The Trojan boys are still in the chase, but they need to keep on winning. Beatty's and Round Mountain's girls are in; so are the Tonopah boys, as are the Lady Muckers -- if they can win out. That's how the playoff pursuits are progressing, with eight days remaining in the regular season. The regionals will be contested Feb. 12-13-14-15-16 in southern Nevada. The Class 3-A boys and girls will go to Del Sol High School in Las Vegas Feb. 14 and 16, while the 1-A teams play first-round games on higher seed courts Feb. 12 and 13, the semifinals at Durango High School Feb. 15 and the finals at Del Sol Feb. 16. There is nothing settled in the Southern 3-A boys pairings -- beyond defending Nevada champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran clinching the No. 1 seed. The Crusaders are 6-0 in the division, with two games left. Moapa Valley, Virgin Valley and Pahrump Valley are still in the chase for the No. 2 seed and Boulder City could get into the post-season tournament by winning its remaining three games. In South 3-A girls, Virgin Valley, 6-0 in the division, is at Pahrump Valley, 4-1, tonight. A PVHS win would create a deadlock for the No. 1 seed. Faith Lutheran and Moapa Valley have dibs on the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds, while Boulder City has to win its remaining three division games to be considered. In South 1-A basketball, Round Mountain's girls lead the Central Division, with Beatty third and Tonopah tied with Indian Springs for fourth. Lund, Spring Mountain, Tonopah and Henderson International School are in the top four in the Central. This weekend, Beatty is at home against Henderson International School today and travels to Round Mountain Saturday. Tonopah entertains Indian Springs today and is at Lund Saturday. Games Feb. 8 and 9 will put the Central 1-A playoff picture into focus, with one of the key matchups Beatty vs. Tonopah in a girls' game Feb. 8. ---- Projected first-round playoff pairings in Nevada: North 1-A Girls -- Eureka vs. Smith Valley, McDermitt vs. Virginia City or Coleville, Wells vs. Pyramid Lake, Owyhee (defending state champion) vs. Coleville or Virginia City.
