Caregiver support group

The Caregiver Support Group is a new program developed by Nathan Adelson Hospice to relieve caregiver stress.

Participants will learn ways to identify and reduce the challenges in caring for loved ones with a life threatening illness.

Clelia Pinza Garrity, a social worker with over 25 years of hospice experience, will lead the group.

The first meeting is 2:30-3:30 p.m., Feb. 7 at the hospice, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd.

Golden years pageant

The Ms. Senior Golden Years USA invites the lovely ladies of Pahrump who have reached 60 to enter the 2008 pageant.

A fashion show, luncheon and silent auction will be held Feb. 23 at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino to introduce the contestants to the board of directors and the queen's court.

Free tax aide service

IRS trained counselors will be offering their services beginning Feb. 2 at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B, Basin Road and Highway 160.

The goal is to provide free tax preparation and e-filing to young, low-income taxpayers and working seniors who may qualify for the earned income tax credit and may not be receiving it.

The volunteers will be available Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., during the tax season, Feb. 2 through April 20.

Master Gardeners

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will host a pruning workshop at 9 a.m., Feb. 2, at the extension office, 1651 E. Calvada Blvd.

The Pahrump Community Library is located at 701 East Street, and is hosting the following events in February:

Feb. 2 -- Friends of the Library will meet at 9:15 a.m., Feb. 2 in the conference room. The guest speaker will be John Salacan on book restoration, binding and rebinding.

Computer classes are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and include introduction to computers, beyond basics, Internet and email and genealogy. Times vary and sign-up must be in person at the library. No sign-ups by phone. Classes are free and space is limited.

Nye Adult Education

Nye County Adult Education is offering free classes for Pahrump residents. Classes for English as a second language, preparatory classes for GED testing and preparation for the U.S. Citizenship exam are starting now.

Women Entrepreneurs

A support/networking group for women who either own a business in Pahrump, or are interested in starting their own business will provide support from other entrepreneurs, information to help start/grow a business, classes, speakers, networking and a chance to socialize with like minded women.

The group meets at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday evenings at Great Basin College, Rm. 107.

Horse club

The Pahrump Valley Rough Riders are having the first Gymkhana Horse Show beginning 9 a.m., Feb. 16 at McCullough Arena.

Sign-up is 7-8 a.m. and all ages and skill levels are welcome.

There is a $50 membership fee and each show is and additional $20 per show fee.

Fees include ribbons, end-of-year buckle and prizes.

To be eligible for end-of-year prizes, participants must ride in eight out of 10 shows.

PVHS T-shirts

The Pahrump Valley High School Renaissance class is trying to collect old PVHS T-shirts from anyone who is willing to donate. They are making a quilt to display at the school and in businesses throughout the valley to demonstrate how PVHS has changed.

The type of T-shirt doesn't matter as long as it is from PVHS. Clubs, sports, music, homecoming, and any others are appreciated.

All donations should be turned in to the A building office, the main office or Room B-28 by April 1.

Rummage Sale

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold the quarterly rummage sale, 8-4 p.m., Feb. 1, and 8-1 p.m., Feb. 2 at the church, 1300 E. Hwy. 372 at the corner of Pahrump Valley Boulevard.

There will be craft and household items, new and used clothing, toys and games, linens and books, large and small appliances, home baked pies and cakes and soup and sandwiches will be available.
